what are these square boxes for?

i assume theyre something to do w/ hot water? cuz it doesn't look all that crazy if you go from left to right, it looks like it's a copper manifold hot water on the bottom and they goto 1/2 pex lines and the top is copper cold water manifold that goes out to 1/2 pex lines

They are a Zone Control system for either Radiant Floor Heating, or some other "heating" appliance. They usually are wired to a primary controller, that is wired to a Thermostat in the zone it controls.
