No, that /is/ how statistics work. A single outlier can alter the mean value substantially if it is a large enough deviation from the rest of the set. Plotting the data points on a chart would show the normal distribution (bell curve), with the giant wang as a lonely point off on its own. The peak of the bell would, obviously, then provide the *real* "average".
