I was just thinking of this "brain in a tank" quote the other day when we were talking about the Matrix, how Sid's game had come up with years before The Matrix put it out there.

What a great game. I need to download this from GOG and play it.

It's a masterclass in world building and an amazing piece of science fiction. God it was so damn good.

Mid to late 90s was something else when it came to high quality science fiction. A genuine 5-6 year golden age well never see again.

SMAC
Deus Ex
Homeworld
Half Life
Xcom
System shock 2

Then not as high brow but still good fallout, star control 2, star craft, command and conquer.

Myth: The Fallen Lords was the some of the best world building and gameplay. Peak Bungie was soooo good. Homeworld was literally jawdropping at the time; I called my grandparents (who lived right next door at the time) over to look at it when I was in the beta. The box reminded me that the single player campaign was a mystery when the game launched.

That time will never be equaled in its creativity and its richness.

Pics because the Iron Law of FSR requires them but also because these games were so awesome.

How ironic. They way the world found out that the reactor had exploded was a nuclear plant in Sweden noticed rising levels of radiation. They figured out it wasn't them...

I listened to an interview with he guy who initially detected it. They always check themselves when they come to work and the alarm went off when he clocked in.

So he thought "well fuck we got a leak" but everything was fine. I think they checked the wind and weather patterns to see where it came from but it did not help that the USSR denied anything had happened.

"Becquerel" was a word that's forever imprinted in my mind, that was what all the grown up talked about and feared back then.
