I've actually had one and it was honestly way less painful than normal cavity drilling. I think it has to do with the root being dead. The only awkward part is when they jam those little things in there and that's largely because you feel the force of it.
Then all you end up with is your jaw bone deteriorating over time and becoming brittle. I am at the point where I need 11 prosthetic teeth that they are going to have to drill into my jawbone to help arrest it. If you do not manage it, it leads to osteomyelitis. Not that one tooth will lead directly to that, but if you have one tooth that needs it, you will likely have more as you age.
