Youve really never seen one of these? At the "Penny Arcade" on Mainstreet in Disneyland they had a ton of them in the early to mid 90's before they modernized it. You would put in a penny and crank the machine which would flip through various scenes. My favorite was the one with the train.

They also had a machine there where you would hold 2 metal pillars and it would shock the shit out of you. The best part was, once it started shocking you, you were unable to let go. I had my mom do it and she dropped to her knees screaming.
