why should they replace all their heavy outdated equipment when they can just charge passengers more for their luggage to compensate?

Airlines aren't going to change out from VCR's in a lot of older planes because anything added has to be resubmitted to the FAA and not just that particular DVD palyer, it has to be sumbitted and cleared to be used in that particular type of plane with the other equipment already on board. So unless it's a relatively new one they aren't going to go thru the expense, or wait for a total refit.
