Laws of Leviticus and all that nonsense. Bottom line: Eating Shellfish (Lobster) = Sin according to the Old Testament.
Old religious texts were sort of a way of administering a health code. Since they had a poor understanding of bacteria back then, it would make sense that certain foods might be considered "unclean".

In the same way that many of the more outlandish tales from Ye Olde Texts can be seen as attempts to explain some of those once-in-a-lifetime natural events (that happen *all*the*time* somewhere on this blue marble) that someone (or someone's cousin's sister's husband's manicurist) saw.

Still, knowing the rational behind this shit does make it a tad hard to get all hardcore with organized religions.

I would rail at the political nutjobs who raise certain old US documents up Upon High for the same reasons; but fuck, if logic doesn't work on the "bat shit crazy" things from 2000 years ago, how the hell can anyone expect it to work on the "slightly outdated, could use some minor refreshing" documents that are only 200 yrs old?
