Strange... I was taught e.g. meant exempli gratia, and i.e. meant id est, but then again I was raised as a cultured European, and not an American Inventor. Though, in a couple of generations we will probably end up like this lady above... :/

while she's wrong in specifics, she's right in spirit. a lot of people are taught "in essence and example given" as a mnemonic tool. besides.. what do you think exempli gratia and id est translate into?
