it's really silly that this is bothering me...

e.g.; an abbreviation meaning “for example.” It is short for the Latin exempli gratia, “for the sake of example.”

Id est, usually abbreviated as i.e., is a Latin term that is defined as meaning in other words or that is.

so yes, her exact translation is off, but she's right in how she's using it. here in America, we are taught both the original latin and how to functionally use it.

I appreciate the fact that you know what the abbreviation actually means and i support your use of it. Do you think she does also though? Or do you think that she thinks (was taught) that i.e. means exactly "in essence" and that e.g. means exactly "example given"?

If you understand the difference that i'm making, then we're cool. If not, then you're butchering Latin. I couldn't give a fuck less what you're taught in America and saying that you're taught that in America doesn't make the situation any less repugnant.

Honestly, I don't know what she thinks. Because of how I was taught, I find it equally plausible that either she was just using shorthand, or that she's just some dummy who either poorly learned or was poorly taught

When I go back and rewatch House, I hear about Munchausen Syndrome or Munchausen by-proxie all the time. I wonder why I have not heard it in modern doctor shows in forever?

I couldn’t tell. When I originally posted that, I hadn’t thought it was. But after taking a second gander, I thought it may have been. I surf this site on my phone. Old eyes, small screen.

I had to take a couple of years of Latin back when I went to school in England, and I'm here to tell you if those fuckers werent already dead I'd kill them myself for inflicting that language on me. Amo, amas, amat, amamus amatis amant my ass! Rome makes a good movie image, but a crappy language.
