If everyone could do it, then a lot more would. Most people simply aren't smart enough to go through 3 semesters of Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and 3-4 semesters of Physics just to get into their major's core classes. And that's why the degrees with the highest starting salaries are all science and engineering.Totally in agreement then. Honestly? I like it this way. When my last company started laying folks off, a bunch of us disposable engineers as one business guy put it all left. Each and every one of us had jobs within 2 months of starting to look. I don't want a ton of engineers. Since I started this job 6 months ago, I've heard my boss and my boss' boss lament that finding good chemical and mechanical engineers is impossible now. Kids just don't go that route anymore. It does make me a cocky fuck at times.
Its a damn travesty. I have advised kids in my family as they hit college that math, science, and engineering are how you keep a job. I mean, I have a master's too and zero fucking school debt because I did a research master's and got paid for my work on a grant. I will say that comp sci is probably the most in demand now, but that just swings demand in other areas.
I've got a good buddy that I play mmo's with and have hung out irl a few times. Dude does all sort of spreadsheeting and theorycraft. Has a ridiculously sharp analytic and strategic mind when it comes to games. He manages a fucking pet store for a pittance. The guy could have a bangass job and hasn't stepped one foot in college and is nearing 30. One of the smartest guys around and he just wont' fucking apply himself. If everyone could do it, then a lot more would. I tell the younger members of my family the same thing...if you're going for anything that isn't science/engineering, then you better be planning on at least a Masters in your field or your degree is worthless.
I was leading a top raiding guild on Innoruuk while managing shifts at a Papa John's, so that could have been me if I hadn't decided to turn down promotions and go back to school. I didn't even know I wanted an Electrical and Computer Engineering degree...I just knew I didn't want to make pizza for the rest of my life.I've got a good buddy that I play mmo's with and have hung out irl a few times. GIS for "apply yourself son." Somewhat fitting...what? Not because he's black.
