There is a world of difference in terms of deceleration when hitting solid ground vs. being caught. Terminal velocity is ~122 mph. If you hit the ground and decelerate to rest in, say, 0.01 seconds you'd experience >500 Gs. On the other hand, if being caught means a half-second deceleration, now you're only feeling ~10 Gs. Might both kill you, but it's not the same G forces/deceleration.

Of course if he doesn't catch and support your head you'll snap your neck and you're dead anyway, even at 10 Gs. Now if he matches speed and brakes at a moderate rate, it's all moot.
