Depends. If your heating is supplied by sustainably-sourced firewood, sure, you're largely carbon neutral. Same goes for heat pumps powered by solar. If you're using oil/gas/electric resistive heating, then you're probably less energy-efficient. We bought a house down the street from our condo, and our monthly natural gas use for water+heat+cooking (Nov-Jan) jumped almost 400%. When it comes to staying warm (or cool!) you just can't beat huddling together to reduce surface area. Our summer electric use increased a bit less, but we also added PV so that's free.
