Fought in World War 1 on the French Front.... wounded multiple times including a time when he was shot in the hand. Got frustrated at how long the doctors fussed about trying to save his fingers so he bit them off to wrap things up.. so he could get back to the front.. Compared it to "having a tooth pulled"
He was later named UK Liaison Officer to the Polish during the Polish Soviet war, and stuck around helping them through the Polish Ukrainian War and the Polish Lithuanian War.
Fought in World War 2 (well into his sixties) until he was captured by Italian troops, but to be fair he was a bit old and a bit tired... after having just swam a MILE to shore after his plane crashed into the ocean. The one-eyed, one-handed, senior citizen subsequently dug a tunnel out of the camp and escaped.
