Our website used to have a page which showed thumbnail head and shoulder pictures of our current staff. At various times...
...as our company has grown, our staff has included men and women of various ages, and still does - from early twenties to in some cases forties up to in one current senior case, sixties. Among those thumbnail pictures are a good number of women occupying middle and senior management roles, many of whom have appeared in more junior positions on the page in the past - we are proud of our career professional development here and have been able to fill most management positions from within the company. In fact some people might have said that we are an exemplary employer for the number of women who work through the ranks to management roles. Our founder and just three other early directors/shareholders happen to be men.
Take a snapshot at a different time and it happens that there are no men in customer facing roles (people move around, some go travelling, some move away and some don't succeed - both male and female); the result is that it looks like we only employ women. In fact that is entirely inaccurate, we've employed men based on their skills and ability to do the job in the past and we continue to have men going through our recruitment process now and will do in the future. We prefer to think of people rather than gender but some people look at one snapshot at one point and draw all manner of wrong conclusions.
Sadly, some people decided, in the mistaken belief that they were defending our staff from sexism or exposing sexist recruitment practises, to publish our 'meet the team' page on news and social media sites. In many cases this was done while making inappropriate comments, sexist remarks and commenting on our employees' looks and other references not related to their ability to perform their job function. Despite possibly well intended sharing from many commentators to raise equality issues, we believe that many of the posts in themselves could be seen as sexist and by people who don't know anything about our company, but think it makes a good story. Many of the online commentators were actually linking our staff and company to an entirely different (but similarly named) and unrelated company and its images and photo sites in an attempt to prove a point.
In the modern media environment, an inaccurate assumption can become amplified very quickly and although we strongly insist that we have no reason to defend our recruitment policy, which is entirely open and compliant with regulations and best practices and that there is no case to answer, we are proud of our reputation and our staff and wish to be entirely clear about our approach to recruitment and our withdrawal of the page in question. We know that our staff know the reality of our organisation and how we all support each other here, and we have also received supportive communications from clients, partners and ex staff who also understand our company from direct dealings over many years. So, having spoken to our staff, we agreed to take down our meet the team page while people were abusing the images; it will remain offline indefinitely.
Our company is a great place to work where all people of all ages and all backgrounds are welcome. Success is our goal and the capability to do the job is our key criteria. That's why, unlike many companies, many women have risen to important management roles and we fully expect some will rise even further as we grow. We will not see their achievements demeaned by some of the online running commentary that is not related to the facts and will continue to put the rights and welfare of our staff at the heart of the way we do business.
We have invested significantly in the development and progression potential of all our staff in recent years at a rate of both time and financial investment way above the national average per head and in areas relating to customer service, personal development, leadership, sales and marketing and of course areas related technically to our business expertise, telecoms. We are exceptionally proud of our team and what we deliver for both our customers and business partners. The supportive and happy environment our team enjoy here is underlined by their commitment to not just their work but also the extensive support we give for charities at home and abroad. Our company is a great place to work.
Sincerely,
Damian Mottram
