Hold on, I'm not done ruining Fifth Element for you. The name of the diva was Plavalaguna. Plava Laguna means Blue Lagoon in a mix of Balkan languages. A 15/16 year old Milla Jovovich starred in the rather terrible Return to Blue Lagoon. The same year Fifth Element came out, Besson divorced Maiwenn and married Jovovich. So one of the signature characters of Fifth Element is a reference to Besson's attraction to children.

One of my favorite movies when I was younger but as an adult I haven't brought myself to rewatching it.
A) Mathilda was 12
B) The original cut (never seen it) is apparently creepy as fuck and while it includes more scenes of Leon training her to be an assassin, it also includes more of the 'Mathilda in love with Leon' shit, which he thankfully never reciprocates in the slightest but is still messed up
C) Luc Besson (the director) met his second wife, Maiwenn, when she was a 12 year old child actress and she gave birth to a daughter when she was 16 and he was 33. Allegedly they didn't start seeing each other romantically until she was 15.

Oh a side note, two of the most fucked up films I've ever seen were French films. The first was from the early/mid 90s. Can't remember the name and can't be arsed to search for it. The only reason I saw it at the time was because it was shown as a "Sunday night arty farty film" on state TV in my little corner of Eurostan. The plot revolved around a 10/11 year old boy and girl who eloped or some shit. Can't remember too much except for the final scene where the two got butt nekked (full frontal nudity for both), hopped into bed and under the covers and proceeded to "do what the adults do". I remember my Mother saying something like "Oh, come on, this is too far!"
The second was from about the year 2000 and called Bois Moi! or "Fuck me!" or something like that. It was about two prostitutes who ended up being gang raped and then went on a murder spree where they killed all the Johns and shit. Full frontal nudity and oral/vaginal penetration in a feature film. Saw it in the cinemas here too. Very little sexy about it.
So yea, the French seem to like pushing the limits.

Don't hold your breath, the script Besson wrote for a sequel was used as the basis for Colombiana, which he also produced. He did not part amicably with the studio that holds the rights to The Professional.
