The CSS Hunley, built by the Confederate States of America, became in the first combat submarine to sink a warship in 1864 when she sunk the USS Housatonic off the coast of South Carolina. She was unable to make it back safely to base afterwards however, and foundered, killing all 8 of her crew. (painting by Mort Kunstler)

It was a confederate submarine, they were democrats, killing Republicans.
