idk, it seemed to have done it's job. the US got some cheap oil for a while. The politicians got their "see, we're bringing peace and stability to brown savages" and "omg, War is wrong, stop the war" talking points for quite a long time.
And the Defense contractors all got paid. And paid. And paid.
It may have started with an ill-conceived desire to punish *someone* (someone without the money and influence of the Saudies that is) for tragedies of building falling, planes getting hijacked, people dying; and most importantly having the Daring to attack; but after that cooled off, it's all about the lobbyists and keeping the money flowing the last 80% of the time (with a tiny threadline among some of mental illness in believing we could win this one if we just gave it ONE MORE YEAR).
