In the film version, Nedry came off as a contractor that was dissatisfied with an existing contract and wanted more money when the job was harder than he thought.
In the original book, Nedry completed the automation project as requested. When the park inevitably started having bugs before the opening, InGen (Hammond) forced Nedry to come back and fix the problems for free under threat of spreading lies that he was an unreliable programmer and destroying his credibility with existing clients. Hammond was way more of a villain in the book, which I highly recommend everyone read.
