this still doesn't necessarily explain which sound to use... if you are spelling out an acronym, your above commentary is correct. G - I - F. But saying an acronym as a word is a more vague realm of interpretation.. do you make the same sound as the word that the letter represents? or do you pronounce the spoken acronym as if it were a word itself, in which case G(soft)if does not sound like JIF.
