The first episode wasn't bad. It wasn't great either. The second episode though... geez that was bad.
They were both pretty awful - but the 2D one was awful and tragic given that it had a decent premise (gang ends up in flatland) that was mangled.

As for what happened to Futurama? IN order of least important to most

-It got political - weird random leftist bs mostly from Verrone in the last few seasons. Nixon as President good, Gore trying to save the universe with Gary Gygax, also good. Birth Certificate from guy from future episode - stupid.
-It got too into 'topical' humor - e.g. the iPhone episode, instead of having fun with the future the writers got lazy and just started using current themes.
-It got way too self-referential - e.g. the reference to 'another one of Fry's dogs' In this episode.
-It got too into 'gross humor' - iPhone episode with the vomiting 2Headed llamas or wtf - absolutely unfunny.
-It got too into 'potty humor' - e.g. the VGINY episode. Not funny.

Basically the writers tried to adopt some of the things that make South Park work (topical, sell-referential, gross, potty humor) forgetting that Futurama wasn't South Park and what works for Matt & Trey might not work for Verronne & co. Futurama works when it's sentimental (Fry's Dog episode), scientific (the multiple universe episode), and character driven (Bender's new-robot episode). It hasn't been much of any of these lately.

I agree that the show has lost a lot of it's humor, but don't really agree with any of Tad's points. The iPhone episode was just a terrible episode.

Not to mention they ruin the premise of the whole second episode on the preview right between the two episodes.

When the show moved a majority of it's humor away from the jewish humor/science and into pop culture it really starting going downhill. I'd still say it has a ton of laughs but in between a lot of empty space. Still loads better than the Simpsons though.

I think that's the biggest disappointment for me. References to current pop culture used to be pretty uncommon unless they were either from Fry or the heads in a jar. Now you just have Leela making off-handed comments about recent movies. It's a cheap way to get laughs where the humor used to be a little more intelligent. The other thing I've noticed is that the show just seems a lot more fast-paced than it used to. Both of these make it seem like they've been far too influenced by the Seth MacFarlane type of cartoon with the rapid-fire weak jokes and the flimsy plot.

And, while I actually enjoyed the second episode better than flatland the part with Amy, Zoidberg, and Bender on Planet of the Primates was too reminiscent of the episode where Fry and Leela went to the robot planet.

Three episodes into the second half of season seven and I laughed twice. Pretty stupid waste of time so far.

Odds are only the Ken Keeler episodes will be worth watching. He's the most consistently 'okay' of the remaining crop of writers.

Matt Groening said in an interview recently that they still have a tons of stories to tell in Futurama.

Just how much money does this fucker need? Should put a bullet already into Futurama and Simpsons.

Not sure what's wrong with some of you, but the episodes have been great so far this season. I have no idea what you expect or how you have come to expect it.

well there were 5 awesome seasons, and a 6th that was half awesome, half decent. so the expectations are probably based on that.
