USGS has a Youtube channel and they just posted a video going over it, plus more info into hydrothermal explosions around Yellowstone.

Landslide blocked a major feeder river in BC. Eventually this will rupture and wash away some towns down river. It's like watching a disaster in slow mo until the rainy season hits in a few months.

That's one hell of a damn that mountain made and one hell of a lake if nothing is done about it.

If anyone reads this before watching the video, for some reason: The damn is at the 3 min mark, so 3 min of showing an almost dry river, that may soon get fucked. Then 4 more minutes upstream showing a decent size gully, which will make a decent size temporary lake.

"The government has now measured the landslide at 1,000 metres in length, 100 metres wide, and has a height of roughly 30 metres.
Over the last 24 hours, the lake forming behind the landslide has risen at a rate of roughly 22 centimetres per hour, according to the government."

USGS says 5.2. Not really that big in the scheme of things.

Definitely don't miss California right now though.

I couldn't find a post about any Helene damage so I apologize if I am putting this in the wrong place.

The damage in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee is catastrophic and considered a 1,000 year flood event. Most of the below videos are from the Black Mountain area of North Carolina (some are a few miles southeast). The network of roads is crazy. It can take a long time to go what would seem to be a short distance in normal conditions in many areas once you're off the interstate. It will take a very long time to rebuild such a large swath of infrastructure, residences, businesses, etc. given the terrain, conditions, and accessibility.

I visited the area with my family last September in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. It's truly a beautiful area. We watched a fireworks show during Labor Day weekend and it was the first and only time I've seen a Starlink satellite in the sky. It was one of the craziest things because I had no idea what it was at the time. They are setting up more of them there now in hopes of establishing communications with people who are still stranded in some of the more remote areas.
