That's where I am now residence-wise. Far as I can tell, they make it extremely difficult to own a gun here. In New Hampshire I have no trouble buying guns and I've looked at AR-15's and whatnot up there in the past year or so (without getting any). However with a current main residence in Brookline MA and not a gun store in sight for 60 miles I have a feeling it'll be an uphill battle.

My goal is still an AR-15 and a 12-gauge shotgun. Handguns are awesome and all but they're too easy to shoot yourself with (by accident or otherwise) and I just want big scary weapons for home defense. I'll probably need to go back to NH before I can do that the way I want to.

Bet it's easier to shoot yourself with a shotgun if you have no clue about guns. People lean them on something loaded and they fall. Pull them out of a closet, under a bed loadeed and shoot themself. The only person I know in my 50 years that shot themself pulled a shotgun out of the backseat of a car on a hunt and shot his kidney out and a large part of his stomach.

Once you familiarize yourself with firearms, handguns are no less safe than another firearm. Know your guns and keep your trigger discipline. Every American should own one of each, rifle, shotgun and handgun. Its your birthright, own it and utilize it or it ceases to have meaning or value. Drive those 60 miles and exercise your God damn rights that so many across the globe WISH they had.

I have relatives in Mass. She has a carry permit. It just takes time to go through all the hoops. That is what the left does. They can't outright deny gun rights they just pretend to by making it frustrating enough that you quit.

The Rekieta law people had a few interesting things to say.

First, one of them shilled a book they wrote about being prepared to defend yourself in the court in case of a self defense shooting. I suspect being WELL versed in that is just as important as gun safety..
Second, do not etch, paint, etc your gun. That shit will be held against you in court. Like those, "not guilty" kyle stocks/mags forget which they were atm, posted here. hell no. that shit will be used in trial.
Third, yeah, Rifles are much safer for home defense. It can't be overstated how much easier it is to train and aim a long barrel versus a handgun for the average person. Plus, the dramatic effect. far less likely to fuck around.

Yeah, I wouldn't keep a shotgun loaded around the house. Load it when you actually need to. Takes what, five seconds? I can't imagine having a loaded shotgun bouncing around in your car to begin with.

12 gauge > Rifle for home defense.

12 gauge > Rifle for home defense.

whynotboth, etc

The 12 gauge versus AR-15 home defense debate is a fun one, and I grew up watching The Terminator unleash hell dual-wielding them, hence "I want both"

Handguns are harder for me to aim, less intimidating, etc. Like I'd get one for my GF or wife or something so she can defend herself but they aren't really for me.

Way I see it, you have the shotgun for close-quarters in-home defense* and the AR for if it goes outside or you need to fire at a ranged target.

* - Bullets piercing walls is a huge factor here, my biggest fear is accidentally killing a loved one, a neighbor, etc, by one of my shots missing and going through a wall. As I understand it the 556 is more likely to do that while a shotgun, depending on ammo, is less likely to do it.

This probably all belongs in the gun thread, but Saint Kyle inspired me to pull the trigger (hyuck) on getting an AR.

Stop trying to think you are going to John Wick a home invasion. Unless you are actually John Wick be prepared too have your hands feel like dough when you have adrenaline, fear and screaming wife and kids while 4 masked pieces of shit bust through your door and swarm on you so fast you better hope they are just there for items. Because most people are good people they don't have firearms always on them and even stupider is have it in a safe up a flight of stairs, good fucking luck trying to make it unless your firearm is ready to go.

For the amateur or somewhat seasoned firearm owner, you want the shotgun with loaded rounds in the tube, mag inserted in the handgun or rifle so all you need to do is rack, charge or pump and you can finish business. John Wicks have loaded chambers with or without safety engaged. You may only have seconds to react.

Not trying to come off like an asshole but thinking like you are, you are just another victim 99.9% of the time.

It's not really completely apples to apples, but we had M4's and M9's as our "battle kit." The M9 was basically only for when someone was on top of you (just before you go to hand to hand), or if you're just totally fucked and out of ammo for any other options.

There's a reason you see the military clearing houses with a carbine out and not a pistol. If you can clear a house with an M4 (AR-15), why can't you use it for home defense?

Edit: I'm not kidding about the lack of gun stores either. When searching for nearby stores, they're like all in CT and NH and RI. You have to cross state lines to find one. It's ridiculous.

Handguns are only "too easy" to shoot yourself with if you're a complete dumbass. Just don't be a Binger and carry it with your finger on the trigger and keep it in a kydex holster and it'll never discharge on accident.

Do agree with a shotgun as better for purely home defense. People can still keep going after taking a few 9mm rounds, but they stop pretty fucking fast when they have a basketball sized hole blown into them.
