The fact that the pronounciation clarification giff has the same first letter as the filetype should be the only hint you need as why calling it giff is superior.

I always read it as "jif" but when I talk to other people I use a hard g because that's what most people use.

I have gone back on what is right and just. This brings great shame to my family

In order to make the hard G sound before E or I, English is forced to use the letter G because no other letter stands for the same sound, which is inconsistent with the rule: girl, get, gear, gift. Sometimes, in order to maintain the hard G sound before E or I and still be consistent with the Rule, English will insert a silent U: guess, guide, guild.
