The first Godzilla is a very serious (and actually very good) movie about the dangers of misused science and the organisation in time of catastrophe.

Most of the sequels are more campy and about giant monsters fighting each others more than anything. The exception being the very strange Godzilla vs Hedorah which is a very didactic movie about pollution (the american title is actually Godzilla vs The Smog Monster).

That trailer does not do justice to how strange the movie is!

A dodgy pic taken from the Godzilla Encounter exhibit running during Comic-Con. Sounds pretty cool actually
The movie isn't out until May 2014 but Legendary Pictures tonight provided a glimpse in San Diego at what their Godzilla is going to look like. And while not a scene from the movie itself, you do get an up close and personal look at the monster as he almost sticks his head though the window-like screen. (Or just a smudge? Yes, it's a lousy pic - but the first one.) Transformed was a section of Downtown San Diego into Tokyo street scenes full of monster paraphernalia, underground decontamination bunkers, and abandoned skyscrapers looking out over a destroyed city.

I love that poster above, will be looking to buy one asap.

Even better, this site for the Encounter exhibit makes it seem they are adding to an established Toho continuity instead of hand waving some new bullshit origin story. Fuuuuuck, is it 2014 yet?

Looks fantastic, except that I still contend that the head is too small. It doesn't have to be T-Rex ratio, but for something with sharp teeth (a carnivore), that head is way too small. I like the "personality" of the face, but it's just too small.

yeah man, younger people dont really know the godzilla phenomenon we had with Godzilla. they think he was just a big fire breathing lizard asshole with a vendetta against tokyo. but he was much more than that. he was fun. he had his own moves, he even had his own theme music and eventually stopped being an asshole and turned into a good guy. even the terrible movies were campy goodness. one christmas i even got a bigass godzilla (and Rodan) as presents. remember that one Vvoid? he had a lever in the back of his head which made a little flame tongue pop out of his mouth and for some reason his arm would shoot out.
anyway the nintendo nerd did a whole month on godzilla movies and explained his awesomeness properly.

Hardwick announced they had something special to show, at which Cranston began to unbutton his fly, saying Godzilla is his pet name for it. Then Edwards introduced a clip of footage from the film showing a winged, pterodactyl-type kaiju attacking a Tokyo airport, while the giant foot of Godzilla steps in to join the fight.
Hope the footage leaks no matter how briefly, then again they did a good job of keeping last years tiny little teaser off of the webz.
