I don't remember Oberyn being whorehouse gay but maybe it's just been so long I read the books I forgot.. Still suspected it to be a bit of a lure since the costume designers all talked about giving him something effeminate to wear that he could duded up afterwards. Still not convinced he's actually trying to dick a dude, but maybe I missed something in the books.
As with all of the television series, I'm not too put off that I don't enjoy, because the books are so goddamn convoluted I feel like the show still gives me surprises. Even if it was a bluff by the writers, it wouldn't really piss me off that Oberyn turns out to be a weird somewhat middle eastern version of bi, because I know what he produces in the end. Plus, I know it's kind of hard to accurately portray the Dornish as nigh rebels without doing something pretty radical. I also know from the preview clips and the writing excerpts he still does what he was meant to do, though I will admit what happened this episode did sort of leave me saying "what the fuck?" Honestly, I can't even remember what happens in almost the entirety of Feast for Crows or even a decent amount of the books before since it's been a while and I've sort of got myself stuck with the mindset of Dance of Dragons and Victarion.
Still, Oberyn being bi is a little bit disconcerting, and I don't remember that from the books nor do I think it happened or was implied. Maybe someone with a better memory can correct me.
In the end, he's still the Red Viper, and anyone that's read the books and seen the trailers knows he's going to keep being the Red Viper.
As an aside, I really like the new Daario. Most of my lady friends who watch the show didn't like him because they settled into Skeelzball McCreepy, but a few saw the light. That guy needed to be replaced, whether it was because of pre-existing obligations or they just canned him. There's still no gold tooth, but I'd rather the actor for Stannis take the place of Daario than the old guy keep it. Maybe it's just me. The chicks who had read the books all liked this one better, so I'm happy to know it's not just me.
The main thing I don't like about the episode is it shows me how quickly the show is going to catch up. Martin's not going to get Dream of Spring done for damn near a decade if he's still going to operate by the same method, and the series goddamn sure isn't going to do a whole season based on Feast for Crows. They're going to have to combine it with one or more of the books to keep people watching who have especially favorite characters. Feast for Crows isn't exactly written to please crowds like that, at least the way I see it.
IMO the series is going to catch up to Martin within 2 years, by which time he'll probably (or hopefully), have the next to last book done. But there's no way he writes himself ahead of the series- especially since HBO won't have the luxury or the will to do Feast for Crows by canon in a single series by itself.
