Writing well is hard. From what I've seen of Martin, he has a general outline, maybe a few characters/scenes he can get passionate about and really write those well, then he tries to motivate himself to write the less interesting shit that ties it together. When he can't self motivate, he does side projects on stuff he feels motivated about. When you aren't motivated, you also tend to be highly critical of your own work and probably burn through tons of "junk" drafts.

ive been planning to, lord knows im a sucker for those kinds of books and genre. my problem is time, i have plenty of time to read them if i was a normal person, the thing is fantasy fiction and gaming is like crack to me and i cant just read a book at my leisure, if a book is good i wont stop reading it til its done. i did all 5k+ pages of the game of thrones books in a little over a month and i was actually dreaming about the fucking thing every night. when i finished book 5 i was sad because i didnt have another one to read, but i was also happy because i could get back to my normal routine. its gonna be a while before i can dive back in. i gotta work myself up to a 10 book series where each novel is about 1200 pages long.
