I'm so close to pulling the trigger on the PS3/GTAV bundle. Trying to decide if it's worth it just to play Uncharted 3, Last of US and GTA5.

I don't regret selling my 360 and grabbing a ps3 for the games I missed one bit.

Ps4 on pre-order.

I'd like to know how much was spent on advertising... it's got to be at LEAST 2/3-3/4 of it.

I played gta4 for the first time in a long time over the weekend just out of hype for 5 next week, and man either games have come a long way since 2008 or gta4 might just be a bad game. I remember liking 4 overall, but there are so many things wrong with that game. And i know i am beating a dead horse here but holy fuck are the driving physics bad. I had been planning to buy 5 on the 17th but somehow i am slightly less excited for it now.

Yeah I'd like to know too. I remember BF3's advertising being 50% of its budget.
I went over some of these numbers when people couldn't figure out how the fuck Schilling blew so much money. These are all very basic, but it's easy to see how you get up that high:

5 years x 200 employees average x $90,000 average salary x 1.2 (mark-up for benefits, health care, whatever) = 108 million

That's just employee salaries and benefits. Now I'm just totally guessing on the number of people working on the game and it obviously wouldn't have been static over the development cycle, but you can see how quickly costs stack up. Now throw in overhead for office space, hardware, software, licensing, voice acting, and so on. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the game was over 200 million before marketing costs.

What I found most impressive was that GTA4 has apparently sold 25 million copies. That's fucking unreal. I wonder though what their average sale price was. I got mine for pretty cheap on Steam if memory serves, maybe $20 for the base game and the other campaigns.

GTA4 generated $500 million in sales its first week of release so the budget for GTA5 doesn't surprise me in the least. It's absolutely crazy how much this franchise is worth.

I would say that the "average" grunt style programmer would only be $60k a year. $90k sounds like a higher tier. Maybe more schooling.

You also have to keep in mind other cost issues like building lease/mortgage, insurance, maintenance, equipment (like new computers for people). It's all very expensive.

Then you have to factor in the pay scale for all of the voice actors. They probably get paid a flat daily rate regardless of how many lines they actually have. So yeah, it all adds up and quickly at that. The 3 year thing is the biggest killer. That's a LONG time to front the bill with no incoming funds.

Yes it's worth it to play Uncharted 2 (3 isn't nearly as good but is free with Playstation plus anyway) Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, Demon Souls, The Journey, GTA 5, Little Big Planet 2, God of War 3, Ni No Kuni, and about 5 other games.
