My wife is a child. In this case she buying it for my Xmas, she's told me I ruined Xmas to dare ordering one on my own because I'm not psychic. She then got angrier that I felt mine was a better choice and cheaper so she decided she'd keep it as a self birthday gift.

didn't fight her on it more since maybe we can replace the toaster I hate with it for most things
if you use the temp probe for the air broiler function it should work fine, just remember to stick it in side ways, not from the top (from the top is just to check temp)

this is how you keep a probe in for monitoring
Meat-Thermometers-cover.png

the thing to remember is, to put your steak on when the pan (the pan is thiccc and dense, and needs to heat up) and the internal temp is 500degrees (takes a few minutes, it gets hot fast), you do not want to start your steak on a cold pan, b/c then your just water boiling your steak.

i assume youre getting some 1 or 2in steak cuts?

Only broiler/oven steak I've ever had that was good was as a kid when we had mo electricity so everything was propane. Propane stove with a broiler tray under the oven that broiled with the open flame element.

The stovetop is messier searing, but better than the oven or air fryer steaks I've had. Liberal sister in law who swears by her instant pot and air fryer has tried to tell me how great air fryer steaks are because you can do the fresh green beans right on top of the steak at the same time. Very dubious that is good. She also hates her cast iron and induction range, which seems like they'd be perfect for searing a steak, but I dunno we both think the other is an idiot.

Anyone doing (good) steak in the oven or air fryer?

I find the best steaks are seared for a nice crust in a pan and then put in the oven to finish.

Supposedly Jordan Peterson cooks his steaks in an air fryer when he's traveling because he's on a steak only diet. When he gets to the city he buys an air fryer and enough steak to last for how long he's going to be there and then just leaves the air fryer in the hotel room when he goes home. Seems pretty ridiculous but I guess if you have a lot of money and a weird enough diet it works. Probably costs less than trying to get 5 steaks a day in a restaurant.

Jesus, "Supposedly" is doing so much heavy lifting in that paragraph.

For cheese fondue, what should I put in the pan to keep the cheese from sticking, olive oil or red wine vinegar? I've cooked a fondue at home before and can't remember for the life of me what I used in the pan, but I know it was one of those two things. I'm guessing either would work due to the acidity of the RWV.

Gonna do Gruyere, easily the best fondue cheese IMO.

I recall hearing him say something to that effect in a podcast appearance. Lex Fridman maybe?
That's probably where I heard it too. He said it himself FWIW, I'm not just repeating rumors or something. Maybe I shouldn't have said "supposedly".

Air fryer seems a terrible way to cook a steak. I'd just buy a camping stove or one of those asia people electric ranges. You'd be able to sear it, thus get a much higher quality steak, and those little doodads are like 15$.

Guess I'll save them for the wierd electric grill George foreman in disguise. Just hoping I can use indoors if I'm not using the smoke part.

Did the electric with the dumb ninja micro wood pellets on 1/4 lb burgers. Tasted like a good smelling but awful tasting cigarette.

awful tasting cigarette.

From the wood pellet? Or maybe residual chemicals on the grill plates (I clean and bake shit off good and still my nonstick waffle iron smells bad and always tasted off to me).

I googled that ninja wood pellet electric grill and am still confused, but it shouldn't taste bad, right?

I'd say bad, smoke just way too strong. I mean it tasted like the wood flavor just overpowering, smaller fairly dry patty didn't help.

Guy I know found one of the old Sunbeam toasters at a thrift store and got it working (think it needed rewired). The saying is it was simpler times, but sometimes I just think better.

There was a motivation to make quality stuff back then. Unfortunately people tend to buy the cheapest option so it's been a race to the bottom on price and quality has gone down with it. Who cares if your toaster only lasts 2 years when you can get a replacement at Walmart for $20 and put it in the landfill?
