Publix had its non-prime rib roasts on sale this week- loin (filet) and NY strip roast (…ny strip)

Got 4 nice steaks out of a 25$ roast - have 1 left i may make an actual roast from… or just wait for prime rib and make more steaks…

may grab a loin- they are about 115$ even on sale- but it should make about 5-6 filet mignon and a tail.

anywho- took the trimmings from steakifying the ny roast and figured i would test the wok.

i think the induction works well w/ wok style as it heats up fast like gas. tossed some onion and shrooms- was good, better than i thought it would be
Jesus, I've been priced out loin roasts in a while but God damn, I have a hard time stomaching those prices. I figured next week HEB will have their holiday stuff out, maybe coming Wednesday which I think is when they change out stuff. Hoping it's not going to want to make me burn down the meat section.

Yeah its i think on sale 17$ lb - i think its 7$ off. The NY roast was 8$lb 7.5 off so like half. That’s Publix. Everyone is expecting Thursday to drop the prime rib / standing rib roast sale… and fingers crossed for the 6-7$ range

That's weird, why doesn't the title say 'The best way to cook standing rib roast'?
I knew you were going to come in here and say that, but he's French, so he might screw up every now and then, but that's also because everybody incorrectly calls it prime rib. If you're going to get hits on your video you got to call it prime rib, and not the appropriate standing rib roast...😉

I know when I lived on the East Coast Publix isn't exactly cheap. They're not bad but they're all proud of their prices. HEB is the true way!

I think the one I bought last year during the Christmas was like you said 6 to $7 a pound. I don't remember what grade it was maybe choice, but could have been select, but I know the one we did I went through everything in the case and ended up going back to the butcher and just politely asking you got anything that looks better than the ones you have out in the cooler. Most of the time if you're just ask them for a little bit of help they're more than accommodating.

If I remember I think I had the guy cut me off a three-bone section for my wife and I, and I wanted the stuff down towards the chuck. I just like it better for roasting, especially reverse sear. Hey even a lower grade rib roast it's still delicious as long as you know how to cook it. Anytime you would go to a separate club up in the northern Midwest, for some hole in the wall steakhouse, what grade a meat are you typically getting after all.

Publix is never good on prices. Their claim to fame is bogo’s - growing up - not so much now, bc “diversity” but - poor - kash n karry, then windixie then Publix - we never had the boutique grocery stores , now we do but 30yrs ago, Publix was the whole foods green mart whatever type place…. Now with the EBT takeover KK is gone, Windixie is rare and Publix is aaaallll over the place

for me being new to publix, their prices are the same as kroger, if i know i want something "wierd" like the weekend all of a sudden my wife said, "i want persimmon", yea i'll head to publix. They rarely have any bogo and their meat is at least 30 to 50% over kroger.

I was at the grocery store the other day and noticed the prime ribs were mislabeled so i spent about 5 minutes lecturing the butcher.

Yeah - Publix is rarely good on meat unless it is a sale, then its usually barely at or under alternatives. However, very regionally - Publix has a very "high" reputation in the meat department, one earned in the 90's as Kash'n'Karry and WinDixie both got really, really bad reps for meat. Also back then Publix was all prime with cheaper Choice - while the other two where Choice and Select... now-a-days everyone is Choice and the lower end do have select - the prime stuff is "Special look at me!"

No Kroger- but I see their delivery trucks - may sign up to see

And there it is:

More than 2 @ 11.99 lol... there is a place where there are 2 publix that share a stop light intersection, I will cross the street... and ... if you want "2x 3 rib", just get 6 rib! or whatever - silly limitation but there to keep someone from being a resaler lol I guess.

What is the "Good" end? I may get 2x 4 ribs from that side- the chuck side?

Got 2 roasts, 3 bones each from the small end and the loin roast was still on sale, they had a nice one that was not 150$ (only 100.....) and it had very little "tail" and should make about 7-8 steaks and still have a little tail roast I will su vied as its hard to evenly cook a tail that gets thin- but that is what the fancy water boiler is for. Each standing rib was about 50$

So - 250$ for all the roasts so far and the freezer is stocked with NY Strips, Filet and Rib-eyes.

Since we're on the topic of meat, I came across a local rancher who offers full or half cows, full on free range/no hormones/etc. Ends up to be about 300 lbs after butchering/prep, averaging $14/lb. Was going to split it with a friend of the wife, but they took their sweet time, and now just found out they're sold out for the year. ughghgh.

That seems a bit more than what I would have assumed it would have cost. I know somebody else on the foreman posted their last purchase of a half a cow or a quarter of a cow, and I thought their numbers were somewhere between six and seven dollars a pound.

I could be mistaken, and I don't know the prices on meat off the hoof, but that just seems like a lot more then it should be.

Was it some special sort of cow or breed? I know beef prices have skyrocketed, especially after that big cattle grazing land fire up in Northwest Texas, but damn, that's still a hell of a lot of money.
