That is not a ringing endorsement.
I use my mandolin all the time. I get a new one every four years or so. The blades get dull if you use it a lot for root veggies that are firm (like beets), which I do. Awesome to make shoestring fries, too. Best way to cut up cabbage for brazing, as well. The holder I have has spikes. You mostly waste a little bit at the end of whatever veg you're cutting, but there's really no risk to the hand if you use it, and I can stand to lose 1/8" of potato.
