Yeah the difference in HL 1 and HL 2 marks the degeneration of the FPS industry. Instead of a solid shooter where NPC interactions were kept to a minimum, the sequel almost reversed the ratio with long badly written semi-cut scenes.

it just feels like most of its wow factor and cred is stuff you'd have seen before if you played the others. Like a generation where Halo was their first fps.

which I think is a big problem with their, "we only want to make a 3, if its groundbreaking." immersive sims have come back, and are pushing boundaries in all directions. physics sims,voxels, radiant a.i. etc.

exactly which direction should half-life go, and are they just treading over old ground?
thief? gothic? bioshock? deus ex? prey(2016)? open world skyrim?

HL1, except the last 15 minutes, was one of the best games of all time. HL2 they had no resource constraints and unbounded design around taking a simple set piece story from HL1 that was tight and fun and making it into some ridiculous space opera bullshit. I really, really struggled to make it through HL2 because it was so boring theme wise. Soviet brutalist architecture, I didn't care about anything they introduced as characters and areas we should suddenly care about because muh reference.

HL1 was mostly environmental storytelling, HL2 was more narrative driven. In both cases, they represented a divergence from the FPS models at the time they were released

I thought HL2 was amazing at the time, but it does have pacing issues if you play it now. But that’s lots of media - Citizen Kane has tons of innovations in cinema, but the movie itself is kinda boring if you view it now because those innovations are ubiquitous in all movies now

I agree completely. They were both great games at the time because they really broke the old mold. I remember so many things in both where I was like damn this is cool like the ninjas. HL1 is more replayable to me though. I played it through a few years back with some mod that let you play online with your friends.

Leaks showing the new Valve VR headset coming at the end of the year and my guess is they will stick with VR like they did with Alyx for the next one and I'm not opposed to this. Alyx was an amazing VR experience and it's sad no one else has stepped up since that game to show what VR can do.

Outside of HL:Alyx, most VR stuff is mid at best and crap at worst. HL3 being a AAA VR title would make a VR set more tempting

Pretty funny. All these retards calling HL2 mid today would have been foaming at the mouth for HL3 a decade ago.

HL 2 wasn't a bad game or anything, it was just not the first one and since it wasn't better being any amount worse feels like a huge downgrade. Black Mesa was awesome in ways that random Eastern Bloc city can't be.
