It's also personal preference for instance the f8500 won the shootout with the public.

My personal preference is bright vibrant colors, bright without destroying the blacks, and very sharp. If that's not 100% color accurate really doesn't matter to me much if the drawback is a very dim screen.
Thats probly why I love my Sony KDL-65W850A so much it fulfills all those categories with the added benefit of no input lag for gaming.

Tri luminous makes anything look insane.

I'm going back to Frys tonight to have them crank up the brightness to max using some settings I found on the internet, and see how much the PQ suffers. Also going to see a F8500 at Best Buy.
When I google for "VT60 is very dim", the people all say go with the F8500.

Obviously, I would love the VT to win out because of the cost saving.

On Plex, I still have my HD roku box, and it looks great, but would rather just have everything from the TV itself.

As far as the PLEX app, I'd be a little cautious on that unless you've seen it in action. My Panasonic plasma can use PLEX via DLNA, and it looks like absolute ass. I tried using it for the same reason you are considering it, but it sucks so much balls that I couldn't take it. I mean, it functions and does what you expect it to, but it is sort of like using a Super Nintendo for your media player. I have no idea if that Samsung has a better interface or not, but check it out before you let that be a deciding factor.
The PLEX on my LG set works fucking great and can stream my 1080p Game of Thrones over WiFi without issue or degradation.

Sorry, I guess I was a little unclear on that part. The streaming and everything works just fine, no degradation of the actual video or anything. It is the actual interface that looks like a Super Nintendo, to the point where I couldn't stand to use it. The playback itself is just as good as any other though.

I am wanting a 40"+ TV to go into my office as mainly a computer monitor and my ideal budget is <=$399, what are my options right now? My planned use is PC gaming with a controller from the couch I have which is probably 6 feet away.

Almost got that oCosmo linked above but saw that the response time was 8ms. Am currently looking at the Samsung EH5300 which I believe is 5ms, but I wanna know what my other options are.

Forgot to update this thread.

Went to A Best Buy Magnolia, where they had the vt60,zt60, and f8500 all calibrated right next to each other in optimal conditions

ZT60 won hands down. That picture outshown those 3 displays imho.

Would the input lag on plasmas (like the ST60) vary at all based on screen size or is that completely irrelevant? The CNet tested was a 55 inch and wasn't sure if that made a difference.

Also, anyone know long it usually takes Amazon to restock (or a site that tracks how long something has been in/out of stock)? Their 50 inch is out of stock. I'd like to buy the 50 inch ST60 and I know I could get it direct from Panasonic or somewhere like BB but Amazon's customer service makes me want to get it there. The 55 inch is another $300 so I'd not really looking to move up that much.

don't buy a panasonic plasma right now, panasonic just announced they are exiting the plasma business. all production stops next month and units will no longer be sold after march 2014. If you wait till january the prices will be significantly lower, like maybe 50% or more.

Panasonic concedes plasma TV defeat, ends production | The Verge
Curious, why do you think the prices will drop so much? Think they'll have trouble selling their inventory?

Hey guys. I'm planning on getting my girlfriend a soundbar for her 42"-47" HDTV (I can't remember the size off the top of my head). Or a stereo setup, it really doesn't matter. It doesn't need to be too terribly fancy. Any suggestions?

If she has room for them, get her a pair of these:Amazon.com: Pioneer SP-FS52-LR Andrew Jones Designed Floor standing Loudspeaker (each): Electronics

They're often on sale for $75 a piece (they come single, not in a pair) and they would be *far* better than any sound bar you could get in a similar price range.

Except you also need a receiver on top of them and they take far more space.
Yeah, kind of need a receiver to get the most out of them. There is that. Though a decent one to run them wouldn't cost much.

I did add the caveat of *if* she has room for them, but I guess reading is hard.

Yeah I was reading a review that mentioned those. I'll keep an eye out on SlickDeals etc and see if I can get a pair for $150 like you mentioned. I have been reading really good things about the Vizio S4221W-C4 soundbar soifI got a soundbar I'd get that one. She definitely has the room for those speakers though (I couldn't convince her to get a larger TV for the room she has).

Suggestions for a receiver for those speakers? Think I'll need a subwoofer too?

Subwoofers are nice to have, but you don't strictly *need* one for them. They have a decent range - they go down to 40hz.

I'm not really up to date on current bang/buck subwoofers or receivers unfortunately, but the subwoofer that goes with the set that the speakers are part of is decent:Amazon.com: Pioneer SW-8MK2 Andrew Jones Designed 100-Watt Powered Subwoofer: Electronics

i have a costco bought vizio soundbar in the living room, a haier one in my pc room, and a yamaha one in the den pc. just prefer soundbars now to big sound systems since its less wires and remotes and shit for dogs/kids to fuck up. The one gaige linked above looks really good, might upgrade to that one if one of mine dies. One thing to think about is how many devices you are gonna hook up, and how you want your sound routed. On the living room one I have the vizio take HDMI input from the TV and the TV is passing through audio through HDMI, so the cable, boxee, and wii all work out through the soundbar. I think the yamaha one I have doesn't do optical and is more limited in how you can route sounds.

none are as good as a full 7.1 sound system, but honestly i'm too old and deaf to really tell the difference anymore, I just want loud and clear sounds

since its for your gf keep in mind soundbars DO have remotes, but you can 99% of the time get your existing remote to handle it. I know my wife will yell at me if I try to introduce a new "ok you have to use this remote to control the volume and press input when you want to watch...", but luckily the Samsung TV remote can be programmed to tune the soundbar volume up/down, mute, and I always just leave the soundbar running. I specifically had it take sound from the TV hdmi out so you would never have to input change.

Why would you go soundbar over stereo though? I can see why someone picks a soundbar over the hassle of surround sound, but I don't get why people drop straight from surround sound to soundbar. Is having 2 front speakers in your watching space that unappealing?

Don't you need a receiver for stereo speakers? The Zvox I linked is everything, including Dolby Digital, and all you have to do is use an optical cable to your TV.

Yup. Keeping all that peripheral questions in mind. She has a HTPC hooked up to the TV and nothing else and likely never will have anything else hooked up because it does everything she needs (movies, TV shows, music, sports, etc) and she doesn't play games. I'll be able to figure out how to hook that together. And as far as remotes go she just uses the keyboard or her TV remote to control sound which should work just fine.

I don't really care if it is sound bar, speakers, surround... whatever. As long as the price is reasonable and it sounds decent. And by decent I mean better than the built-in TV speakers because other than a few TV's those all suck (and hers do especially). I know fuck all about receivers for stereo speakers though.
