Insomnia is pretty annoying. Anyone know any good techniques or ways to make your mind stop thinking of everything in the universe when you lay down to go to sleep? Ill literally be sitting at my desk nodding off but the second Im in bed, I cant fall asleep.
Have you tried sleeping in a recliner?

Brown noise does it for me.

Manage your metabolism. Cut down on sugars and stimulants, or at least exclude them from lunch and dinner. I've noticed some enthusiasm, among amateur athletes, for glycine supplements.

Socially engineer your time. Shift all stimulating activities to the top of your day, even if it means getting up early. Read or listen to something snoozy at night.
example: get up early to bang your girlfriend before work then later fall asleep easily while your wife talks about her day

I absolutely hate melatonin - it makes me feel so drowsy in the morning. Ambien causes severe dependency issues, so I tell my patients that Xanax is far better. But, the issue with benzos is of course, early dementia and benzo withdrawal can be bad. One of my coworkers recommended magnesium (specifically 400mg mag glycinate) so I tried it out since my work schedule is so bizarre. I've had some pretty damned good sleep since being on it and maybe a handful of times do I require a "GET TO BED NOW" remedy (sublingual Ambien or 0.25mg of Xanax).
I was told the same thing by a friend, drowsiness in the morning. Doesn't happen to me, at all. That's probably why it's worth trying, the worst it can be is that you'll have some nightmares and that drowsiness, and I guess you'll try something else, but if it's working, it might avoid you using some stuff with severe secondary effect... Certainly not a miracle pill though for everyone, though.

I had some crazy insomnia a couple of years ago. Not the standard toss and turn kind either, but I would fall asleep for 1-2 hours and then wake up and have this really weird experience where I would doze and jolt awake for the next 4-5 hours. I'd literally get 5-10 minute little naps the rest of the night. After it happened for like a week straight I got super nervous that I had some sort of brain problem which of course made it even worse. It was like my adrenaline got all out of wack and was treating my bedroom like it was a jungle in nam or something...

My doctor gave me ativan and it helped some but I had to combine it with the OTC antihistamine stuff to actually sleep all night. After about a month of sleeping normally with meds I backed off of everything and (knock on wood) I'm back to sleeping normal again and haven't had a reoccuranc in over a year.

It's the weirdest thing. I can't sleep for shit if i'm wearing clothes. I'll sleep, but it's not entirely restful. I'll wake up tired-ish.

If I sleep naked though it's wholly restful. IT's damn strange, because i've always worn clothes to sleep. Always. I've never been a nekkid sleeper and i've always thought it was weird when i'd meet naked sleepers.

But I guess now I get it. Just noticed that in the past few months.

My 5 year old has to sleep in just his tighty whiteys or he just keeps waking up. I'm an underwear sleeper too. If I even have a pair of shorts on I can't do it.

I have no issue sleeping though. One of those dudes that seemingly falls asleep the instant I touch the pillow

I ruptured my achilles today playing basketball. Felt like someone stepped on the back of my shoe and getting hit with a baseball at the same time. I was being pretty reserved and moving slow. There isn't much pain with this injury, it's kind of strange given it's a major tendon. Piss poor timing too. My insurance runs out on Wednesday (through my wifes work) and I had applied for some short term coverage and it was lined up to start on July 1 until I can buy something better through open enrollment in November. I really don't know how to go about the whole thing. The insurance I have now will cover my visit on Monday with an ankle specialist but I don't know what to do after that. I was advised I would need surgery at the Emergency Ortho today. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Go in immediately before your insurance runs out so you can file against it.

Are they going to suture it back together, or just conservative ‘let-it-grow-back-together-boot’?

Ruptured Achilles will need surgery. It won’t grow back together like two bones might if they’re reduced properly after a break. I can’t speak to the insurance side of things, but the procedure itself is pretty straightforward.

Eh? Sure it will, it just takes longer. We’d often do the boot /walker that locks your ankle in dorsi-extension with gradual angle reduction over 12 weeks, with those for whom surgery was deemed non viable - fatties, smokers, chronic infections, elderly, disabled etc. You know - vs risk of infections, re-surgery, anaesthesia etc.

My bad then I guess. I’ve seen a ton of repairs and have never heard a surgeon talk about just using a boot for a complete rupture. It’s always surgery, at least with the surgeons I see the most.

If your coverage is being terminated, you qualify for a special enrollment period and can apply for something through the exchange up to 60 days either before or after the term date despite it not being open enrollment.

It'll be more expensive than a short-term policy, obviously, but the coverages will be better if you don't want to do the deep dive to figure out what the short-term policies do/don't cover.

Still fighting cancer-trying to avoid homelessness organized by Charlie Hundersmarck

really fucking ashamed that i even have to start another GoFundMe, but 5 years of cancer later i just don't even know what the fuck to do

literally trying to avoid being homeless, if i can't raise enough money for a new place on my own then i'm going to have to go to the shelter for a bit to get on the right government lists for Section 8 housing and whatnot

FML seriously debating going to Oregon to get euthanized

Found out a number of years ago it's very hard to get a doctor that stays in place for very long. Once you get going with one that might be onto something he moves someplace else. My neurologist that was actually working as a general practicioner and telling them it was neurological when they claimed it was, he retires end of the month :(

Went to blood Dr. yesterday. Drew 14 vials of blood. Test for some came back today. I'm perfectly healthy and my cholesterol went down from last time. I go next week for a CT scan to see if my lymph nodes in neck are swollen.

Some of this is starting to make sense. It never showed up in blood work other than slightly anemic. But my lymph nodes have hurt all the time, not major pain but I could tell they were. The skin pain. Apparently it was really really bad itching. It didn't feel like itching at all. Scratching it made it worse. But I used caladryl on it and it is the only thing that cuts into the pain just a little. Infection after infection. 95 degrees now and I run the heat during the day I never warm up even sitting in the sun.

All symptoms of lymphoma which is why I'm having a CT scan to look at my lymph nodes.

I realize it's small potatoes compared to you assholes one-upping me with cancer, but the PA said it's the worst nasal lesion he's ever seen. I could see on the endoscope video a giant (relatively speaking) patch of exposed cartilage right in the center. Expecting a call later in the week after he consults with a surgeon. It's a relatively minor deflection so I hope to god they don't end saying a septoplasty is the best way to fix things.

Did you ever end up getting that septoplasty?
