I'd also say that like many free-to-play games it will depend a lot on what your goals for the game is. If you want to climb to high ranks (and Legend eventually) you may have to splurge on some packs to get there in a timely fashion (caveat, warlock zoo and huntertaker decks may still be good enough and they aren't that expensive, but I'm not really on that end of the spectrum to speak with any authority about it).

On the other hand, if you just want to have some fun with the game and play a bit every couple of days (or more if you feel like it), you can do that without spending anything, though as said I'd probably shell out for Naxx since grinding the gold to open it can be a bit much. For reference I haven't put any money into the game and I have some decent if unspectacular decks that I have a lot of fun playing. I don't play a lot, mostly dailies and some arena or the two in conjunction, and usually end up around rank 10-13. And I don't have a single legendary card outside of the ones you get from Naxx and hardly any usable epics. Most of my epic cards are shit like hungry crab or incredibly niche like murloc warleader and doomsayer.

Just got this working on my Nexus 5. Buttons are a little small, but almost no lag or frame-rate issues.

Just finished playing against a Handlock.

We go back and forth awhile and he uses Shadow Flame which clears my board of everything but a Taunt Slime and drops a Heal Bot on himself to bring him to 22 health. I bring out Death's Bite, kill the heal bot and drop a Sludge Belcher. He then plays Jarraxxus... I couldn't believe it. He, effectively, did 7 points of damage to himself and took Molten Giants out of the equation (he didn't play either of them). I hit with Sludge, drop Gromash, axe face and finish him off.

After the game he sends a friend request. I fully expect the tirade of rants and swearing but all I get is a "gg" I was shocked.

I was experimenting with Demonlock today, so I ended up with a lot of almost good lists, but they weren't based off anything or taken from anywhere.

Mage I stomped sends me a friend invite to say my "unoriginal" deck is a "cancer on the game and I should die."

Feels good. The fact that two dozen people were watching him make a retard of himself live on my stream was just icing.

I'm not going to lie, I've been having a ton of fun with a Face Hunter deck and middling success. It's just funny to me for some reason. TO THE FACE!

That's what I've been playing as well. Lack of legendaries and epics kind of demands it though. Went from 18 to 12 in a day or so. I admit it gets a little monotonous, but it's still better than trying to make my druid work. And it is alot of fun in a trollish sort of way when you drop Undertaker/coin/leper turn one, leper/webspinner turn two, and then Misha or feign death if a couple of your deathrattles are still up on turn three.

Well from everything I've been reading you either play face decks if you're new or don't have the legendary base to play control. Then once you either spend the cash or grind enough to play a viable control deck you can sit and talk shit about aggro low dust players running a cheap style.

Edit

I've just made rank 16 using the lock deck with only starter cards and already have people friending me so the can bitch about how cheese worthy I am
