No reason except it being a pain in the ass. I physically can't fit through the access hole. I may have an employee skinny enough to get through it, then I just have to convince him to do it, and do a good job while doing it :p

Or save yourself the lawsuit and hire a dude off craigslist?

I don't know what WA offers but can you get tax credits on insulating stuff or at least a near free energy audit like here? Seems like a good use before the tax year ends.

The credit here is up to $450 when hiring a professional and have to get pre-approved. It would seem that from the numbers I've been finding that after the rebate it'll still be 2x as expensive as if I just did it myself.

Thinking about crawling up there and fucking with fiberglass is triggering me hardcore. Fuck that shit.

I've been doing easy things like sealing around the eletrical outlets on my ceiling and using outlet sealers.
They might do more than you think. It's pretty common to have outside air bleed in around electrical boxes. Even in a relatively tightly-sealed house you can do a blower door test and you'd be amazed at how much air you can get around some boxes.

lets say I made most of the attic space lets say 1200 of 1500sqft R39 or 50 etc. But that part where the attic is tiny and has no room might only be R10. Will the added insulation on the rest of the attic be moot? Like a big gaping hole where all the heat leaves the not as insulated part? OR will it be say without any insulation it costs $100 a month to heat. If I had perfect insulation it would be $50 to heat. But instead with good insulation on most and only partial at that point it'll be $65 to heat.
Added insulation elsewhere won't be moot, as in those areas it will stop heat loss. But at some point (I don't really know where) there will be no real point in adding more insulation if you're going to just let one spot sit there without much of anything in it.

If you were anywhere close to me I'd borrow our thermal camera and take a look at your ceilings from the inside. You can get a general idea of how poorly an area is insulated by just using a camera to look at your walls/ceilings. A lot of the time you can see empty stud/joist pockets or see where cold air is leaking in badly. Without a camera you might be able to just put your hand on the ceiling - if it's ice cold, then yeah, do what you can to get more insulation in there (super scientific suggestion, I know!)

Thinking about crawling up there and fucking with fiberglass is triggering me hardcore. Fuck that shit.
That's part of the reason why I don't want to do residential remodel shit any more. Climbing into an attic in the summer, sweating your balls off while itching like a motherfucker trying to fish wire down walls? NOPENOPENOPE. Not remotely enough money in it to make it worthwhile.

For your attic area the solution may be to get a blower (rent from HD or lowes), get the hose back in there as far as you can and fill it up as you pull it out. (check and see if you have ridge or soffit vents that you don't want to fill up when you do this)
Fucking with insulation in a confined space is indeed the worst, and the only thing that could make this job worse is it you were doing the underside of a floor.

Adding as much as you can in one spot in theory is fine, but as soon as you start getting gaps or airflow between the layers you hugely reduce effectiveness.

It's a bit cheaper than the inexpensive devices with a built in computer. Always wanted some FLIR action for a rifle, not that I'd really ever use it.

Plan is to blow in insulation on Tuesday. I was thinking some 2 inch abs pipe connected to the end of the hose to get in the back.

I've got some areas with MDF nailed down over the joists that used to be a deck for storage in the attic. While it could be a pain in the ass to remove am I losing much by not pulling it and blowing insulation over it?

If there's a gap between the deck and existing insulation you can imagine what that'll do for the efficacy of the upper layer.

Just throwing that out there, another approach for insulating a roof besides blowing stuff in the attic is to attach styrofoam boards to the ceiling of the room. To meet code (and make it look decent) you then have to finish with sheetrock or flame retardant paint. It's a different brand of pain the ass but I've seen it done when accessing the attic is a special kind of hell.

A concern to keep in mind is condensation between the foam and the old ceiling which can lead to all kind of fun.

I own a roofing company and sometimes blow in insulation while we're doing the roof. We tear off the old roof and remove a few sheets of plywood decking for easy access into the attic. Just make sure you don't cover up the soffit air intakes when you are blowing in insulation. They sell these cheap insulation baffles at Home Depot and lowes that you can staples on down by your soffits and it makes it pretty much impossible to blow them shut. If you blow them shut it makes your exhaust ventilation much less efficient and will void the warranty on your shingles.

I need some help here guys I feel like I am going crazy!

Sometime in the last two years I saw a DIY or a HGTV show where they were remodeling a bathroom. Instead of prefabbed shower walls, tile, acrylic walls or stone they used a product that was made of a soft plastic or rubber. This product came in sheet much like drywall. This product was totally water proof and they attached it with screws...now the panel material was hard enough to keep it's 4x8 solid form but soft enough that when they used a screw it sunk in and self sealed. The product was almost like a hard silicone if that makes any sense

Does anyone have any idea what that product was/is? I have tried going back and searching through episodes on DIY and HGTV but I do not recall which show it was. I have also spent the majority of my free time the last few days doing google searches. Help! Please help!

Thanks for trying but that stuff is made for tile to put on it. The panels I am talking about were the finished product.

I do not 100% recall how they hid the screws, they either sunk in enough and the material spread back out to make the holes nearly un-noticeable or the hid the screws with little cover up plugs. Shit, maybe the screwed near the edge and had some sort of insert to cover the seam. Find me the product and both our questions will be answered :p

And Joe loves you Picasso.

Well some pictures of my back yard are long overdue and the weather warmed up enough the last week for the snow to melt, so I snapped a few on my phone.

New Roof
New Patio
New Deck/Stairs
New Paint
New Gutters
New String Lights

Here are some before and after shots. In that first picture you will notice a raised garden, that is gone now and the the whole rock wall area is just grass now. Also, the weather changed before I had a chance to finish prime/paint the deck support a railing. Painting the railings white and the support to match the house will be my first project next spring.

I don't want to sound like a dick, but I think the before pictures look better. Way better.

You need to get some stuff on that patio. And some things.

So you like rotted decks, 30 year roofs with raised corners, 30 year old paint job/color schemes & shitty gutters?

It is winter time bud, the large majority of my patio furniture is in storage.
