when would the table saw not be an option?

When I'm working with a friend at his house, and he doesn't have one, for example. Also, my table saw is super not portable, so any time I have to do something outside the shop. It's not often, but it happens.

Large sheet goods are sketchy on a table saw unless you have a massive table. There's no really safe way to cross-cut a 8x'4' sheet on a contractor saw that has a 3' table, and even if you get it done it's hard to keep the cut totally straight.

My table saw has a big table, and I have a plethora of rollers that make it entirely possible to easily cut a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood solo. I waited a long time to get a really good table saw, and I wish I had done it 20 years earlier.

Large sheet goods are sketchy on a table saw unless you have a massive table or have invested in wings/extensions. There's no really safe way to do a shallow crosscut a 8x'4' sheet on a contractor saw that has a 3' table, and even if you get it done it's hard to keep the cut totally straight.
got it, so rough cut the 4x8's (whats the max size ppl are comfortable working on a contractor table saw?), is there any time you'd ever use a 4x8 really, other than cost savings of buying vs. 4x4?

for hvac The systems are also far more robust in a home unit compared to a car unit.

I had this conversation with a plumber recently. Basically it's because you need specialized tools. A flathead and an allen wrench ain't gonna get it done.

That is a glorious table saw but fuck even picking up a 3/4" plywood. Especially when the table saw is in the basement. Track saw can break down sheets out of the back of a truck with near table saw precision.

So my backyard is absolute shit. Previous owner owned 8 ridgeback dogs. So now it's all mounds and weeds, with chewed up fences. I had a few contractors/landscapers come in and give me prices for the total job. New deck, fence, storm doors x2, removal etc. 10k-18k are the estimates. This seems crazy high. I mean I just want a plain old palisade fence, and a 14x10 deck. Somewhere to put the grill and chairs...

Someone who has never done this sort of work, can I put up at least the fence you think?

Fences aren't really too bad. Just make sure you know your property line, even if you think the previous fence was on the right spot - a surveyor will save you major headaches and money later.

Also check with your town to make sure you don't need a permit for the fence, or whatever restrictions they might have.

It's.a lot of work but it's not really difficult. You just dig some holes and bury the posts with concrete.

I paid someone. Wasn't gonna fuck with that

10k might not be horrible depending on the length of fencing and decking material and where you live. 18k is definitely an FU quote.

deck 2-3k (this could be higher...there are a lot of variables)
fence 2-3k
(2) storm doors installed $800-$100 (really depends on the doors and trouble of installation)
landscaping 1-2k
removal of the trash materials has a cost, too.

I'd say $6,000 to $10,000 is the right ballpark. You can definitely do the stuff yourself. But you can wind up blowing the savings on tools, rental equip, transport...

If it were me, I'd do the landscaping and maybe the fence and let someone else handle the rest.

No, 18K is definitely a FU quote

We had our fence done for about $5k on a 0.25 acre lot.

Landscaping really is easy, just time consuming. I've been landscaping my yard and it's probably the last time I'll ever do it myself.

Storm doors.. meeehhhh you could probably handle that.

The landscaping...I did my front yard, which may be 75'x50? It broke me physically. I did it. But haven't been out there since the iinitial finish, other than pulling a weed or two.

The storm doors I can definatly put up myself. The cost is around 350 per door if I do it myself.

Think I will just pay these dudes if the price seems right like you guys said. Plus....

It may help to hire for each specific job so you're not paying for someone to GC and hire subs. A lot of variables but 10k doesn't seem bad, particularly if they're doing grass etc and it'll be one contract to a completely done deal.

Buy yourself a few sheets of 4x8 foam insulation I think they come in different thicknesses (and density) and then you can cut right on the driveway with the cheap track saw, or homemade track if you use the insulation foam as a backer for your cuts. If you need something bigger than 4x8 than stack 2+ sheets of insulation foam together. Set blade to be like 1/8 lower than piece youre cutting. But usually its gonna be tearing down a 4x8 sheet of ply to more useful size so you only need one. And if you dont go through the shit too deep like a retard you can reuse the shit over and over.

I'm pricing out mine to do myself right now as well, but it's just the yard. My yard is like some roto-tilled it, and then just spread seed and never smoothed it out. So it's basically so terrible with random holes, you more likely to break your ankle than have any fun out there. Real basic plan so far:

Spread fertilizer to help grass grow
rototill the whole yard to mix it all up
rake it all flat
spread seed
rake the seed to mix it in
Use a water roller to compact it down
Don't step on it, and water it like hell for 4-6 weeks!

That about sum it up?

Yeah, 18 is stupid. That's a guy that figgured you didn't know no better.

Or else he's gonna bring 20 mexicans and do it in three days. Stand in the back and chant "BUILD THAT WALL" while they're doing it. You might as well get a chuckle out of it.

Don't pay some dude 20 grand to fix a fence and build a deck.

Right, I was answering the question as to why you'd want a tracksaw vs. using a table saw.
