Bros any tips for lawncare?

When we moved in around 2 months ago the yard was utter shit. We ripped out all the thorn bushes, all the leaves caked down under the grass, planted a bunch of flowers (my wife), and have been actively working on improving everything in the yard. The grass though.. it gives me nightmares.

There are weeds everywhere, literally, even in the mulch in the front of our yard. There's crab grass and other shit I don't have names for either, lots of dandelions and those little white flowers bees love. We also have a lot of places in the yard where it's just completely bare dirt. A lot of dead grass in the back too.

We live in MA so we get the four proper seasons - scorching summers and fucking hell winters. What's my best course of action here in a year-round sort of action?

I'm already watering my lawn with sprinklers, so that's covered, but I'm pretty clueless on what type of products I should be buying and when (seasonal) to use the.

Any help is appreciated bros. The guy behind me cuts his grass with scissors, so I'm competing with a true gentleman.

I'd start with Scotts lawn careand then do an overseed fall. Could also do some of that weed killer with crabgrass control that you connect to the hose. I've had good luck with that

Everything in the spoiler is what I did but a quick and easy solution I learned of later on is to just nuke the area with Round up grass and weed killer. The bottle will tell you how long you have to wait before you can re plant the area but it isn't to long. You could always double the wait time and then try a small batch of grass seedling to see how it holds then if it's still alive after a week go ahead and reseed the whole area.

This is ok for patches but probably a bad idea if your entire lawn is infested with weeds.

Cheap fast and would probably cost you $150 - $250 depending on how much Grass/Weed killer you needed to buy. 50lb bag of grass seed is like $100.
Ok I bought a new house and went through this for my backyard. Front yard was sod but back yard was just random patches of grass seed thrown around. So the big question is how much are you ready to spend? A few thousand dollars and careful watering can replace your whole lawn in a hurry but since you posted here I am assuming you are looking for the cheaper method?

Scotts or some other lawn care service isn't a bad start for $35-70 every X months but you will need to be proactive.

1. First thing you'll need to put down is some kind ofweed preventer. Spread it liberally.
2. Peat moss and grass seed. Go ahead and buy a big bulk bag of grass seed ($100 for 50lb bag I think) and spread that out and water it carefully but regularly. A well seeded lawn will prevent weeds from growing more then anything else you put down.
3. In the fall put down some form of grass fertilizer and another round of weed preventer.
4. Hand pull weeds. use tools or try your hand at painting the weeds leaves with grass/weed killer carefully but this is a tedious process no matter how you do it.
5. Milky spore - Kills those grass root eating grubs

Next year you should see a noticeable improvement though you will likely spend the next few years working to fill in every spot.

This is what I did after I let my lawn go to weeds during my first year. Now it's green but there was a spurt a year ago where grubs started eating patches but that's nearly fixed now to. As to what specific products you should buy it really depends on what weeds are growing in your yard.

Thanks bros, that's a good start.

The people across the street saw me mowing the lawn and ripping shit out and said it was amazing because it's the first time in 10 years they've seen anyone mow the lawn. Guess the previous homeowners were pieces of shit.

It might be worth it to use a professional company for a year, that's what I did... 4 treatments @ $54 each + like $75 for crabgrass (which I didn't ask for but whatever) and for under $300 the lawn looked great. They give a monthly newsletter with lawn care tips and the guy who did my lawn always called me a week after to check in and see if I had any questions.

I had them come out one time this year and then cancelled and so far the lawn still looks great. That could be due to the fact that we had some of the wettest months the past two months, but who knows, I'm not complaining. The customer service was the best part to be honest, especially since I was a total noob, and this was a local company so you may not get as good of results with a bigger/national brand.

Lawns are the devil, I always lose. I tried replacing my lawn last fall, kind of worked in the front of the house, but I didn't focus on the upkeep. You really need to upkeep that shit with fertilizer and stuff.

Anyway, this weekend I finished all the wood work and yesterday I primed everything and getting ready for the paint. Shit looks good.

I don't understand caring about what's growing in your lawn. If it's green and my mower can eat it, who cares? I'm still kinda annoyed that there isn't a product that will aggressively replace your grass with some kind of ivy that only grows a couple of inches and then stops. I know there are plants like that, give me a way to plant them that doesn't require me to manually replace all of my 2 acres.

Ya I don't do lawn care( other than mowing and planting shit ), but I did what Eya said above few years back. They came and sprayed the yard with some magic stuff and the weeds vanished and grass grew like crazy and by the next year I had a good lawn.
Every time I tried to do it in the past I "burned" my grass and the weeds loved it. Was well worth the money to have a lawn company do it.

Edit, that is looking good Dre, good job!

Not a bad idea, may contact a local company. I just want a green lawn that looks decent, nothing crazy, and definitely not like the guy next to me (perfect length blades of grass and nothing else, deep green). Right now it's a whole lot of yellow and weed.

I have three dogs. They handle fertilizing the lawn and for some reason the beagle murders dandelions. Im talking biting the flowers and and then pissing on them. My lawn is beautuful.

Not gonna lie, after a night of drinking, I've come home from the bar and let my dog out and peed in the back yard once or twice.

My dog dumps on the perimeter of the yard, I think it's some sort of warning to other dogs
I have 2 cats who love taking dumps on my garden pathways. I'm pretty sure they piss there to but it washes away to fast on the gravel. Entire yard to take a dump in and they choose our vegetable garden pathways.

I shit in my own yard so that I can enjoy that one small piece of dog ownership.
When my parents went on a vacation once my brother told us he was going to shit in their yard and blame it on the dog. Parents came home and went "What the fuck, look at the size of this shit!!"

They had a 9 pound Daschund.

Like someone stated earlier, first focus on nuking all the weeds, then once they are gone/under control, focus on growing grass. If you try to mix the two you'll get mediocre results on both.

Take this summer to just annihilate all your weeds, then plant seed in the fall.
