I don’t know what you mean by jump over. You’d be surprised what they will jump over. They jump over the electric fence around my chicken coop and there’s maybe 2 ft of space between electric and coop.

I mean if what you say is true and they can’t jump over then just do any fencing? Id just be wary… Deer will get it if they want it.

Alternatively plant a sacrificial crop nearby. This has helped me quite a bit. They love to eat my Bahia grass.

Nah thinking more about protecting individual trees and shrubs that they like vs the whole area. I don't really want to put up a big fence around the whole back landscaping nameen?

Yeah I do “namean”. It sucks and I’m gonna have to do it. I’m not thrilled about it.

In that case get that 5 ft cheapo garden fencing from Home Depot. Wrap it around trees (give it room to breath of course) and use zip ties to close. Then stake it with metal u stakes. I’ve been doing this with my ornamental trees ever since some buck decides to scratch his antlers on one of my smaller sweet bay magnolias 😔

Heads up - 2024 chick drop at meyers went live last night. I ordered 2x F 1x M brown Chinese goslings. Why you might ask? I dunno I’m impulsive, it was 9pm on a Friday night, they seem fun, can do some weeding and maybe I can breed them for a little meat.

Does anyone do waterfowl or poultry besides chicken? I’m trying to get my 2024 orders in. I reallyyyy want to expand to some ducks. Id have to create a pond and come up with some good way to filter/drain it to make it as low maintenance as possible.

I have a section of my gardens I enclosed with fencing. I made it 8' tall. The bottom half is small metal gid that is buried 10" into the ground, the upper half is cables stretched between posts, spaced about 3" apart. It has been incredibly effective. Next spring I'm going to do something around my orchard.
It sounds like I don't have as many problems with deer as you do. It might be because there's so much farmland around me. *shrug

lurkingdirk lurkingdirk or anyone - have suggestions on a dual purpose breed? Leaning more towards the meat purpose.. Feeling impulsive and meyers just had 2024 drops.

Ducks are fun and you don't have to have a pond for them. If you did I'm sure they would swim around in it, but they are happy without it. They will however, get into any open water you have sitting around and make it absolutely filthy. Some ducks lay a lot of eggs as well.

Meh, the laying birds stay around so much longer I don't see a benefit in this really.

So you’d just buy broilers? I don’t like the idea of non-self sustaining chickens.

Well, then get some dual purpose ones. Just hatch enough each year to keep a couple to brood after you have butchered the other ones.

Looking for my next homestead animal.. I have chickens. I have ducks/geese coming in next year.

Really want a llama and maybe two alpacas but not sure what purpose they’d serve. Llama could act as a guard llama but my electric fencing should handle predators..

Goats seem like a good investment… Milk, meat and I can shepherd them in the forest to do weeding…

How bad are goats? I hear people complain about them all the time. Often times it seems these complainers have half-assed enclosures. It seems like nigerian dwarfs may be a good starter - good dual purpose. Not sure how loud they are though..

I know your goats wil be as real as your African adventures but I cant pass up an opportunity to shit talk goats.

I've never met a goat owner in real life who didnt constantly have goats escaping. The internet of course is full of them, but the contrast tells me something.

Goats are the devil; the animal symbols in the Bible werent chosen randomly, but written for a people with millenia of experience herding goats and sheep.

Goat milk is undrinkable bullshit anyway. One of the grossest things ever.

Get sheep.

Goats are on the mischievous side. If there are weaknesses in your set up they will help you find them. I have NDG and they are not loud at all. They can be, in that they will yell for me when they see me, but as a normal routine they don't really make any noise at all in my experience.

Awesome. I’m pretty good about making predator proof setups due to high bobcat/coyote/black bear pressure.

Im thinking of building something like this, maybe make them smaller and do multiples. Its on skids so you can just pull it around.. That way I can tow it around property with UTV. Would love to get them in the woods and start doing what natural fires should have done..

Maybe the only PITA with this is moving water around with it. Dunno how much goats drink.

Blazin Blazin i guess I obviously need a male if I want to produce milk.. Do you just keep your male completely separate the rest of the time? Wondering how many I should start with..

I baby my goats shelter wise, I would add a forth wall at least partially so they can feel more secure and escape wind if necessary. Goats are weather pussies compared to other livestock, they really don't like inclement weather and getting wet. Bucks would need to be kept in a separate enclosure (including no shared fence) Goats can not be alone. So a wether would be a good companion if you wanted a buck. Milking is a demanding chore, not that it's hard but would require doing multiple times a day everyday. Maybe just use them for weeding and if you want to take it further later then do that. My recommendation would be maybe a couple wethers which can be had for cheap then if you want to take it further get a couple does, still not hating it then get a buck. Bucks smell horrible btw, they like to piss on themselves and it can be rather pungent.

Fences should be woven wire not welded wire, goats will push on the fence everyday and welded wire will fail. For NDG I would recommend fence at least 48" tall

Thanks. Yeah I don’t have time for that milking. The weeding could be super helpful though.. I’ll see if I can find a whether. I guess it doesn’t even need to be a NDG in this case either. Maybe I’ll just find some goats on Craigslist.

Yeah, I’ll build a basic four sided shelter then.

My girlfriend had a dairy goat for a while and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between it and cow's milk. Some people claimed that they could but I always wanted to set them up a blind taste test to see if they really could.

That description is nothing remotely similar to the goats milk I've tasted from many different goats.

Your girlfriend either had a magic goat or maybe a very small cow.
