RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.

Tis the season for horror. Now that October is upon us, I will begin the viewing of favorite horror flicks in anticipation of Halloween.

Some of my annual favorites include (in no particular order):

Comedy horror:

Would love to see recommendations from other members.
The Mist is incredibly underrated. Darabont managed to take a King story that was already tense and gory and give it a twist that even readers weren't expecting. I know the movie suffered a bit with studio interference, etc., but it's still a damn fine horror movie, even if i think they ladled on the anti-christian stuff way too thickly.

There's a version of the film that's in black and white (for the old timey feel) and I think it helps the film. You can just do that effect on most (all?) video players.

Slither
30 Days of Night
Jeepers Creepers
Jason vs Freddy
Night of the Creeps
The Cave
Halloween H2O
Halloween Resurrection

I don't much like REAL horror, but I love the lighter stuff, as you can tell. In addition to Tucker & Dale, Evil Dead, Scream movies, etc.
Slither is one of my all time favorite creature features. Along with Tremors

Night of the Creeps is an all time classic. Thrill me!

Jacob's Ladder is still top tier.

In the Mouth of Madness also mostly held up.

Event Horizon hasn't held up as well but is still pretty great.

and for something for the anti-"woke";

and something for the pro-"woke" crowd i.e., has the right political messaging, looks great, super shallow, and ultimately hot fucking garbage;

The Hunt. True horror for guys

Inside. Italian horror, very bloody

I agree on Let the right one in. It's a really good movie.

(A movie that absolutely cannot be successfully remade)

(Saw this on Prime)

(Also known as Nightmare City, think this is still on Prime)

(It is rather the gruesome sight when their bodies burn)

(A movie experiencing a strange renaissance right now among people fed up with modern movies)

Near Dark is my favorite vampire movie.
I have never been able to catch the first 10 minutes of that on twitch.tv/starlitedrivein however will agree that it is pretty cool movie but I'm a sucker for anything with Tim Thomerson or Lance Hendricks. Bill Paxton is great in it and you get to watch a child burn to death, good movie.

-----

(This is... bad but fun)

(This is... bad but fucking amazing, Andrew Divoff is so much fun to watch in this one)

Avoid Wishmaster 3, and if you get the chance to see Wishmaster 4 don't, just don't. That being sad, Wishmaster 1, 3, and 4 are all available on Prime.

Think the entire Leprechaun series is on Prime as well last I checked.

Shoutfactorytv.com has a great selection of movies to stream and you don't even have to register for their site. Especially if you are sick of "good movies" and want to watch something different because either the makers failed, were insane, or both. Take for example The Devil's Rain starring Ernenst Borgnine and William Shatner, it's a beautiful mess. They have some okay movies on there like the original Day of the Dead and others but is a half decent site if your looking for soemthing lesser known or possibly forgotten.

It's on Shudder right now. Near Dark rules.

Watched some Mike Flanagan horror on the weekend, all pretty good

Oculus
Ouija: Origin of Evil (make sure you watch the prequal, the first one is hot garbage)
Doctor Sleep: Directors Cut - Much better film with the missing 30 minutes restored

None of these are high art but are entertaining

If you are looking for a psychological horror try The Babadook, I thought it would be dumb but it was fantastic. Its on AMC+ if you have that via Amazon, which is a pretty good deal since it comes with Shudder.

An American Werewolf in London
Creepshow
The VVitch
The Bride of Frankenstein

I also enjoyed the horror anthology The Mortuary Collection that's showing on Shudder. Definitely feels a bit low budget/made for tv, but it's not taking itself too seriously and some of the stories are fun.

Grats all - here is one of the best (Slow burn - beware) horror films of all time: And free:

It is also on Shudder as a part of Season 1 Joe Bob's drive in so you get some of the behind the scenes and history of the film. Maybe not the way to watch it the 1st time because it kind of breaks up the movie. But still, worth it.

The House of the Devil is a really great revisiting of the 70's Satanic cult movie. It's even shot using some "Instagram" 70's filter and using a lot of old camera techniques which I thought might end up being too gimmicky but ended up adding a lot to the movie.

Pontypool is a really great zombie movie, in the vein of the original Dawn of the Dead. It's also a new enough take on the zombie/infected genre that it is actually quite clever, also poor man's Lance Henrickson does an incredible job in it (Stephen McHattie, shitty way to classify the guy since he's a far superior actor but I always think that he's Lance Henrickson when I first see him).

Another one with McHattie in it, albeit a less major role, is Exit Humanity. Most people that I've recommended it to haven't liked it but they haven't been able to really give a reason why so I think that it just might be a genre specific taste movie. It's basically 28 Days Later but set after the Civil War.
Recently rewatched all of these (wife is out of town and he hates horror so I am taking advantage) and agree with your assessment on all of them. House of the Devil is basically a direct homage to The Evil. Pontypool is low budget horror done right. Exit Humanity is also a great fucking movie, but hard for some people to wrap their heads around.

I know you are dunking on Henrickson, but he is good when you give him the right material to work with. In terms of Horror, Near Dark is probably my second favorite vampire movie ever, behind Only Lovers Left Alive. And he is great in that movie. Kathryn Bigelow directed that as her first movie and would follow it up with Point Break.

On a humorous side, Slither is probably my favorite comedy horror movie of all time. James Gunn at his best with his favorite actors make that movie really good.

The first two Hellraiser movies will always be among my favorite movies of all time, though.
