Aside from some of the obvious things like Pandora/Spotify/Slacker radio stations how do you find new music/shows?

For me I do a lot of Spotify trolling but also use We Are Hunted and check out the various charts (especially the emerging chart):

For shows I don't think there is a better site on earth than Songkick, and it also integrates with Spotify, scans your local and starred libraries and automatically starts tracking those artists for you:

I check out what people post in the "What Are You Listening To" thread and check out bands/artists who have articles written about them in various music magazines - whether guitar-centric or more mainstream like Rolling Stone. Believe it or not, I've found out about a lot of great groups from Rolling Stone. They always have half-page articles about a band and if their sound or influences sound interesting enough, I'll check out a couple YouTube videos or their MySpace page.

^ pretty much same. I browse this forum and one other that have a 'what are you listening to' thread and I've found a few good bands through that. Every great once in a while I'll check up on pandora or spotify radio for some lesser known bands and have found a couple good ones through that. But that's every once in a while.

I also like to browsehttp://www.reddit.com/r/ListenToThis..it is scattered though, so if you don't like mutliple genres it may not be the best place to be. Every post, however, will have a Genre tag at the end of it so you can sort them out faster. I've discovered a ton of music via reddit.

If I want to find more of a certain genre I'll go to my favorite artist's last.fm page and look up similar artists (for non-metal).

Metal I'll usually download any new album that is a sub-genre I like.

Most of my friends enjoy metal, so i hear alot of stuff thru them. Other than that - metal blogs and related artists on lastfm/spotify

A way that is not posted here yet is twitter for me. Sometimes I will end up checking out some bands I see on Jimmy Fallon too.
