I'm all for being reasonably frugal and not living beyond my means, but there's zero chance I'm ever going out and digging through people's trash unless I'm homeless.
The best thing to do is find out when the nicer neighborhoods in your town do their yearly spring or fall community garage/yard sale. There's 1 neighborhood in my 'burb where the homes are usually 5-10x more expensive than the "average" home, people canvas that neighborhood with U-hauls and trailers like crazy when they have their yearly neighborhood garage sale. I snagged a brand new Weber BBQ grill for like $50 that normally retails for $800 a couple years ago.
