The movie was decent until the dog died and then he met the woman and kid.

The original ending (not the theatrical one) was a lot better, IMO. All through the movie, they keep hinting that the vampire things aren't total mindless creatures and there is still something human in them. Then in the theatrical movie ending, they ignore all that shit at the end and Will Smith blows himself up and all the vampires. In the original ending, he final recognizes what they had been hinting at with the vampires and is able to get a temporary truce by returning the alpha vampire's mate.

Haven't read the book Decades so I might be wrong but I doubt it

The movie was just a mindless vampire/zombie/end of the world movie.
