James Mangold Believes in Indiana Jones, but His Real Hero Is Steven Spielberg
The "Logan" director took on Indiana Jones because his real hero is Steven Spielberg.

It's like making out with a chick, then she whips out her dick.I rewatched Crystal Skull recently and, surprisingly, I thought the first half was decent. Some of the things that get knocked as silly or dumb you can find very easy parallels in the earlier films -- I think there's a bit of a nostalgia bias there (is the life raft parachute or getting the diary signed by Hitler really that much less silly than the fridge or the greaser vs preps fight?).
That said, the second half is pretty terrible still. It looks so bad both with the CGI and the cinematography, it really loses focus on Indy, and Blanchett turned in an awful performance.
the opening scene with the teenagers and the military was so classic Lucas that i thought it was going to be a great film. to me it went south with Shia Lebouf as Indy's sidekick. it really should have been shortround back then too. no idea why he was cut off from the franchise after Temple of Doom. he could have succeeded Indy in some manner or even gotten his own spinoff. did anyone find him annoying in ToD?I rewatched Crystal Skull recently and, surprisingly, I thought the first half was decent. Well, I thought he largely left the industry as an actor. IMDB has two acting credits in a nearly 30 year span before 2021.the opening scene with the teenagers and the military was so classic Lucas that i thought it was going to be a great film. to me it went south with Shia Lebouf as Indy's sidekick. it really should have been shortround back then too. no idea why he was cut off from the franchise after Temple of Doom. he could have succeeded Indy in some manner or even gotten his own spinoff. did anyone find him annoying in ToD?
i thought he was doing the Jackie Chan thing and appearing in Chinese films all this time. thats kind of sad. there was no reason why he shouldnt have been casted in other things. i guess he was an 80s novelty like Gedde Watanabe. though, Gedde is still working .Well, I thought he largely left the industry as an actor. then it should have focused on Roswell more and less on fucking up Mayan history. there were no interdimensional cake eaters there. at least work with the Aztecs who were very close to where Roswell happened and they disappeared mysteriously. there was a story there.Indiana Jones was a fine reconstruction of the adventure serials of George Lucas's youth. Doing something new with the franchise by dipping in to the 1950s science fiction genre could have been interesting.
