Into the Wild. The story of a sociophatic religious idiot who managed to kill himself in one of the most slow and painful ways possible

the only good thing that came out of this whole story is the soundtrack, which is pretty fucking amazing (>3 Eddie Vedder)

If you guys enjoyed the movie, perhaps try reading "Into Thin Air". Same author as Into The Wild, but in that case he was actually part of the Everest expedition. Takes awhile to get going, but once shit hits the fan, you won't be able to put it down.

Araysar probably won't like it because Krakauer doesn't portray the Russian guide in a good light.

But for the love of god do not watch the movie of Into Thin Air!
If the novel is too long, read the original article which covers all the major elements. Very fascinating incident.

Into The Wild was great. I felt myself living vicariously through the protagonist the entire movie.

Until the last 15m. Then I cancelled my camping trip and drank some water.

This. A friend of mine loves the book and thinks it taught him abunch about life and so dragged me to see this movie. I came away thinking he seemed like an idiot. To each their own though. He definitely was more intelligent than any of the scientists in Prometheus.

Novel is pretty short. I knocked it out in a couple evenings.

We must have seen different movies.

I thought this was a well thought out documentary. It was daring, and a very rare inside look at the day to day life of a bears lunch.

Maybe I'm thinking of Grizzly Man, or Into the Wild Special Edition.

The really interesting thing is the study made after the book/film came out. He didn't really just starve to death, he was in fact gradually poisoned by a neurotoxin present in the seeds that were one of his main staples. It built up in his body and rapidly began to cripple his limbs to the point where he couldn't walk out of the area anymore and then starved. What is really interesting though is that he didn't make a mistake and eat the wrong plant but actually a "safe" one that would not have harmed a more well fed and less active individual. The article below is a good read about the detective work performed to figure this out.

The whole point of the movie was that he thought going out and doing all these experiences would some how make him happy but he realized it was the people he did them with that ended up making him happy. Experiences with people are generally better than without. The sad part was that he ended up dying alone.
