I rewatched this movie last night and I still like it as much as when I saw it the first time 5 or so years ago. I think a lot of you who are angry at the protagonist just don't get the same feeling as he had, which is all right. Obviously you shouldn't romanticise dumb decisions but the idea of just returning to a simpler time and walking into the unknowns is strangely appealing to me. If you haven't seen it, I definitely liked the documentary Alone in the wilderness with Richard Proenneke - it's old (like from the 70s) but has such a soothing feel to it. This man was prepared properly, though.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Proenneke

Still, the movie in itself is amazing. Great production and you can really see how Chris changes from being so angsty to enjoy his experiences, and the soundtrack is so well made.

The thing that always bothered me about this story is he was close to other cabins that were inhabited in the area and if he had sucked up to the fact he could not figure out how to feed himself sooner he would have lived and been able to learn from his experience instead of just inflicting a prolonged painful form of suicide on himself.

yeah it does boil down to that, in the end he wasn't experienced enough to do this kind of journey alone

I haven't read the book but I thought the movie did a pretty good job of getting that across.

The really interesting thing is the study made after the book/film came out. He didn't really just starve to death, he was in fact gradually poisoned by a neurotoxin present in the seeds that were one of his main staples. [/url]

Says the people who want to make this kid a hero. TBH I enjoyed the movie but having lived in the remote north, the kid committed suicide. I'm all about survival but if you don't know how to simply gut game, don't fucking shoot it. Poachers have no right to be here.

As the ranger said, if he looked at the map he had, he could of walked out of that situation in 30 mins.

Can't cure stupid.

It was still a matter even if that was the case of him not understanding what he needed to do to feed himself and to proud/stupid to go for help soon enough. There were cabins that were not that far from where he died and all the local said had they known he was in trouble they would have helped him that is normal for people living like that you have to be ready to help others because it is an unforgiving part of the country and those who are to foolish/proud tend to die gruesome deaths. I loved the music from the movie and most of the movie was good but the old final act was just a very elaborate act of narcissistic suicide.
