bored enough to troll the investing thread? On the off chance you aren't trolling there is perfectly legitimate cannabis related companies to invest in without goofing around in scam ridden penny stocks

I've made a couple thousand this year on penny stocks. I like the thrill that the VFINX can't provide

Well to each his own, plenty of thrills to be had buying weekly call options on SPY if high risk/high reward is to your liking.

Absolutely this. The only way I'd ever recommend someone talk to a financial advisor is if it's a flat fee. That actually makes sense (ignoring that I'm still dubious of the value of an advisor). A percentage of your portfolio is a ridiculous way to pay for financial services.

It "makes sense" if you're absolutely trying to wring as much money as possible from your clients.

I'm actually using the advisors at personalcapital.com for the first time. It isn't the worst thing as they only charge you a percentage for the accounts they actually have custody over but still give you investment advice on your total net worth. For most of us, we will always be in the 0.89% bracket, but again it's on a much smaller basis since I have a healthy chunk of my savings in 401k which they do not have control of and thus give "free" recommendations for.

The things I really like is their tools allow a much easier analysis of my entire portfolio. Their website hooks into your bank, 401k, credit cards, and brokerage accounts to pull and analyze data real-time. You can then get an accurate analysis of which market sectors you are invested in and make smarter decisions across the board. It's also nice since they cannot make changes to your other accounts, so it gives you a reasonable proxy to login at their site to view activity on your other accounts (I am careful not to login to my financial accounts more than necessary...paranoid maybe, but that'd be my luck to have an account compromised).

I also appreciate that their strategy is really to level-load market sectors (adjusting short/long for your risk tolerance) with the idea that on a given year, some sectors will do good and others bad. I think it's somewhat intuitive that this ebb-and-flow will exist and diversifying inside a sector protects you from a single company wrecking you and across sectors avoids a sector bubble. They then manage the tax loss portion of this for you with the objective of driving a net 0 tax impact. This is something I really don't have time to do, but feel between that and their balanced investment mix they can easily make up the $1500 or whatever a year it costs me to use their services.

It's worth a look even if you don't use their advisor services because the tools are free to use.

you guys do any penny stock stuff?

I'm looking at some penny stocks in the emerging semi-legal cannabis industry

I have no idea why anyone would buy a company that has -eps.

Who knows, you might get lucky. You should just go to the casino or throw some money off a rooftop.

Nice little sell off today, can't tell much from a single day but after yesterday's high the market does seem tired. I would love to see a couple month correction in the 5-10% range would be healthy for the market in the long run. It will be telling how we end the week, any kind of dip has been aggressively bought, will need to see signs of that behavior changing.

To those who followed me into VCSH, seeing some nice gains for such a conservative position. Will be looking to trim some bond positions at elevated prices.

don't think we'll have to wait long to know if this has legs. We gap down tomorrow and we should be in for a fun ride. I almost pulled the trigger on some Telecom, Financial and Energy sector ETFs today but I'm going to sit on hands and wait. Financials were completely pummeled today.

Yeah, a nice 10%+ correction would be good.

I made a shit ton of unrealized gains in the August 2015 and the January 2016 ones (DCA'ing with monthly 401k/TSP).

Quick question about index funds; are they considered diversified on their own? I.E. If i move money from a 401k that used to have holdings in 4 funds (Small Cap, Large Cap, International, and Growth) then should I be moving all of it to the one index since that has beaten most of those funds performance?

It depends on what the index is tracking.

You can find index funds that track very broad asset classes, and some that are very focused on one small one.

Morningstar is a good website to do some research as they'll show you what sectors, asset allocation, and market cap the fund is invested in (click the Portfolios tab).

Energy continues to take it on the chin. I bought some vanguard energy etf will probably take position in thirds as it looks for a bottom.

Chk has been raping me for years.

Up 17% on wdc thx Furious Furious , time to sell?

I think WDC has run far enough. I dropped 1/2 my position at 85, but now, I kind of regret doing that.
I can't really tell you what to do but personally i'm still invested.

On a side note, my position in ENB is now over 500 shares and I will keep buying until the yield is less then 4%

Today was a big up day for me. I had just loaded up on financial, energy, small cap, and telecommunications etf's over the last few days and all saw really strong bounce today. Will be watching closely to decide if I take the quick 4-5% if it gives it or try to hold for longer .

Knowing me I'll selll but will just be stuck with too much cash waiting for a correction that never comes. (This is not retirement money, that stays invested )

My gut read is that we see s&p 2600 this year but man the worries are numerous

I'm staying fully invested and taking dividends as cash. If the market crashes, I got a LOC worth a Mil @ 3.25% and Ill spend that then margin it as well as spend all my banked dividends.
