I read that google has toned down the ridiculous interview questions the last few years. A favorite I saw was "How much would you charge to wash all the windows in Buenos Aires?"

They did a long time ago. Now-adays they just send their interviewers to shame you with complex CS questions that won't come up in any actual work.

My thought is I can get a better feel for a candidate just talking to them. Can some dudes bullshit through? Sure, but not most. Just not a fan of coding challenges and I'll never present one in an interview. Maybe if I thought a dude was trying to pull a fast one on me. Like when they had me step through assembly.

Lot of talk about this PhD joining our team. Not sure why (we're integration and test), he isn't going to do much here. Also who goes for their PhD to then work in defense?

Maybe his PhD was in embedded systems? Or maybe he realized academia sucks dick for him.

There are tons of PhD's in defense. I know we like to shit on it around here, but tons of innovation still happens in defense.

We're using docker to pipeline merge requests from gitlab, should be quite a load off QA. Perhaps enough that we could actually work on said project instead of the product architect deciding to do it himself.

PHDs tend to work on cutting edge murder tools at Defense Contractors. Not what Noodle is working on.

Probably someone who has failed to find a job as he doesn't know how to function outside of academics.
But you don't know what I work on! I can't tell anyone

I like it.more than what I was doing that's for sure. The old team keeps trying to get me back, hoping that doesn't go through

I don't know if the PhDs working on murder tools (missile systems, aerospace) is the largest sector. I'd say there are plenty of them in the intel community doing various intel related things. They usually are contracted/assigned to R&D programs and departments though. I know I'd like to wind up in an R&D dept. someday. You get to try all the coolest shit and don't have to support it long term.

Had it out with my manager yesterday. First negative 1x1 I've had with the guy. But god damn. I don't really play the corporate game too much. I just do work and give the result. So this guy has been pretty mercurial at times but otherwise is okay. But for the 1x1 he decided to chastize me about, "metrics" and "optics." Metrics I generally don't mind talking about but he's gone back and forth about what he wants to see for metrics related to my work. At the moment it is quick summary and he is all, "I have no confidence that you can actually defend why this is happening (in the application) and that you are not providing metrics on things outside the requirements for your projects." Blah blah blah you're right for the wrong reasons garbage. So I asked him if he wants me to provide some number on edge cases that I resolved? Which he did not.

I mentioned about some bizarre defect I fixed a while back and he lost it, "nothing should be bizarre to you! You should explicitly understand all of it and be able to defend the correction without hesitation and back it up with quantifiable metrics supporting the correction!!!" This was a bizarre defect because it was almost impossible to reproduce, I figured that it was some weirdness happening with the network that would try to have it insert a null to the DB when certain conditions were met. Which cascaded into corrupting entire data sets. The guy who worked on the front end had all of the data checks in the UI and nothing at the API or DB level. So I just added some constraints there that did what the UI did and all was good.

Then I got really heated about it. As he berated me about optics. Unlike most the office I do dress business casual most of the time, I don't spend 2 hours + a day in the smoke pit nor even leave the office for lunch really. I also don't make up literally any excuse for WFH ( and actually do nothing like their Golden Boy does constantly). But I will take a break and read a kindle in the cube for some time. I sit in a more visible section of our department so apparently someone doesn't like this. That and my project reporting, "sends the wrong message." Even though I've heard him totally misunderstand shit then try to explain it in a completely incorrect way then get mad at me when his bosses give him shit for it. I brought up that he has three 23-26 year old girls on his team that are completely unable to do 90% of the tasks this team has without total step by step instruction and everyone knows it along with the above.

Fucking dumb. Made me super salty.

mmm.

Leave..

Agreed. Sounds like you are on path to a PIP.

You should also listen to what your boss says. Ignore the shit other team members are doing and focus on yourself. That post comes off incredibly whiney and at some level I suspect your boss is onto something.

Life is not a message board. Careful. You really have very limited business to tell him how to run his department. If he wants to have dead weight around, that is his prerogative.

It's certainly out of nowhere. Dude was cool with me for the past several years up until yesterday.

I've already been looking for a new job so I am not too concerned about any PIP shenanigans.
