"He would steal -- he was a professional thief, sure," David Coulter said
Another blight on society that is going to be painted as a precious little angel. Super.

If this happened in Louisiana, Texas, or Florida then he wouldn't be going to jail. Most southern states have castle doctrine laws meaning that you can defend your car and home with deadly force if someone is breaking in. Doesn't matter how old, if they are armed, or anything like that...

...and frankly I agree with the laws. If someone is breaking into your house you have a right to defend yourself. Not to say that I'd outright kill someone if I caught them in my house, I'd probably tell them to stop and if they moved then shoot them in the leg - unless I felt very threatened. What state is he in that he's being charged with this? Need to know the laws of your state before you shoot someone

Oh, wait this IS in Louisiana and involves a shooting in his yard, not his home, although the thief was undoubtedly trying to break in to something, at least the vehicle - which castle doctrine does cover. This complicates things because I don't know if castle doctrines pertain to yards necessarily but they may be able to prove intent, in which case it'll probably fly.

Also:

Local papers said there was a homeowner across the street that had a video camera running. The kid and his lookout were riding back and forth on this block for about 4 hours before he hopped the fence.

Also, guy hopped an 8ft gate supposedly.
Doubt this guy goes to jail under Louisiana law unless a New Orleans jury just straight up ignores applicable statutes, which may be possible with all the commotion at the moment - but he'll get off on appeal. I also doubt the national media runs with this. The "victim" was a convicted thief and there's evidence showing that he was in the act of committing a crime...

Well, don't steal because something very bad might happen ?

I feel bad for the guy with a pregnant wife and a daughter having to deal with all this shitstorm now...

And if its a real pic he looks older than 14 to me.

If someone is in your home in the middle of the night, or actively trying to carjack you, how the fuck are you supposed to know they aren't armed? Yes. Don't break into people's homes/fenced in yard at 2 A.M. especially in states that have applicable laws that give homeowner's the right to defend themselves. And in Louisiana, everyhome has a weapon.

Earlier in the evening, a different neighbor said the teen in the blue tank top had been biking around the area around 8 p.m. and the neighbor believed he was looking at different houses.

"I thought about calling the cops, but the last thing I want to do is racially profile a little kid who's just biking," said the neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The neighbor and Landry are white; the two teens are black.
Seems like the shooting could've been avoided if the neighbor wasn't afraid to profile "suspicious" behavior. I agree with castle doctrine laws even though I probably wouldn't start blasting away immediately if I saw someone in my home, it's nice to know that I am able to defend my life/home against invaders and the law protects me from shit like this:

One other thing. I honestly believe the parents should be prosecuted in cases like this. If your 14 year old is running the streets at 2a.m. and gets shot breaking into someone's home then you, as a parent, should be held responsible because he's still a minor and under your authority. They literally are to blame for this.

Bad idea. You only fire your weapon if you feel your life is threatened, then you fire to stop that threat, and that don't involve a very small and prone to movement area like the leg.

Yeah. Aim for the leg is a video game/movies thing not a real life thing. If the sight of a gun doesn't stop them neither will the noise it makes. And if you open the femoral artery they'll still bleed to death, unassisted, within minutes anyway. You gotta aim for the biggest part.

The genius of a gun is that it's so powerful all you have to do is hit. Sometimes you don't even have to hit, but you can't count on that.

Kid might be alive/not-a-veg if that neighbor had called the cops or acted more like zimmerman. Thanks Trayvon.

I'm a surprisingly good shot and I understand that a leg wound is capable of killing someone... but idk. I think it all depends on the moment. If it was dark, couldn't see... or they didn't stop when I called out, then yeah I'm blasting away...
I'll skip breaking down why aiming for a leg is dumb, real dumb, and just clarify my previous point, don't employ your weapon unless you feel your life is in danger, if it is in danger, you shoot to kill. If you shoot to wound then clearly you didn't think your life was in danger.

His father died of fuck stomach cancer 3 years ago, so its a little trickier, but ya, my sympathy is still somewhat limited. And in that picture he looks anywhere from 18 to 28 ffs.

Marshall is also a surname.

So you could name your son Marshall Marshall and he could become a Marshall.

If you wanted to get meta with it, you could name him Martial Marshall, who later becomes a Marshall.

Do a lot of people call their kid Marshall ? What if he wanted to be A Marshall ? Mind blown...
That almost happened in real life, a rank above 4 star general used to(and still is) known as field Marshal(in alot of armies), they almost called the allied 5 star generals in ww2 field marshals(the germans called theirs field marshalls). 5 star general george marshall would have been marshal marshall. I believe they specifically went with "general of the armies" instead because george marshal was in daily direct contact with the president and didn't want to be called marshal marshall

General of the Army goes back to post Civil War with Grant, General of the Armies is higher and has only been confered to Pershing and Washington...I think.

right but the army for ww2 wasn't the US army it was the international army which fought in europe and the european tradition used field marshal's. for example general patton held a higher rank* than dwight d eisenhower did in the US army, but in the international allied army ike was the leader.

How General Marshall Came Close to Being Field Marshal Marshall

*it might have been equal rank with seniority I vaguely remember it but it's in this history book of ww2 I have written in 1945

If Roderick Scott can shoot twice an unarmed teen in the street for breaking into someone's car, I'm pretty sure this guy can shoot someone in his own fucking backyard with the exact same "he came at me bro!" defense.

Also, lol athttp://www.cnn.com/2013/07/27/us/florida-boycott/

When they figure out that every state in the US allows you to kill in self defense regardless if the person is black or not maybe they'll boycott the planet and just kill themselves.

Ah I missed the whole coalition side of your first post. Learned something new. Should have gone with Field Marshal anyways, it's far more badass sounding.
