Plot: Tank commander Kalashnikov is severely injured in battle in 1941. The accident leaves him incapacitated and unable to return to the front line. A self-taught inventor, Mikhail Kalashnikov, is only 29 when he develops the now iconic assault riffle — the AK-47.

Its the latter.

When a name is changed like that, it means one of two things

1. It can mean the female version of the surname. Mikhail Kalashnikov or Masha Kalashnikova
2. or its a possessive conjugation, inferring that it belongs to that name or associated with that name, i.e. "Avtomat Kalashnikova" or "Samolet Tupoleva"
