I love my Mionix castor, but it has started to just shut off lately. In the worst possible moments, with me strafing around trying to dodge stuff when I can't turn.

I started shopping around, this being the second castor to die, and was dismayed by all the odd shapes and million buttons. I just want a standard mouse shape.

Then I turned it over.... there was some linty fluff in the optical hole :(

Considering picking up a Roccat Tyon. Button palcement looks good but i've heard mixed results on the software. Anyone have any expierence with these?

ROCCAT® Tyon | Multi-Button Gaming Mouse | Order online now

Roccat software was pretty solid until firmware updates needed to installed. The software lets you do nothing and gets stuck on firmware updates. You couldn't even un-install it.

That mouse I returned. I have big ham hands. Buttons were too small. That fin button on the side was butter though! Loved it.

Yeah the more i read is that the mouse is nice but the software is hot garbage. I'm gonna give it a whirl, mostly because i like the button layout around the thumb a whole lot. Hopefully i can set the mouse bindings once and then never have to worry about the software again.

I've got a ducky shine 4 at home, but looking for a cheaper, non-assuming keyboard for work. Something that I wouldn't care if someone stole it or something.

Couple things it needs. No rgb, or at least hardware controllable rgb. Cannot have software required. Cannot have a memory bank/macro support. Quieter switch options - I can't use blues for sure.

What should I look at?

As someone who has 10+ mechanical keyboards I can tell you the new Kailh Box switches blow away Cherry MX. Cherry feel super mushy compared to the box switches, especially if you like clicky or tactile ones. Currently using the Glorious keyboard with box white switches, they're like MX Blues but feel 10x better to press. They have the same stem as Cherry but with a box shape on the outside which gives you less wobble. You can get a switch tester like this on Amazon:

I'm still using the original WoW mouse from Steelseries. I quit playing WoW during a Deathwing raid because I had to log out to drive my wife to the hospital for the birth of my daughter. (January 8th, 2012).

Anyway, a few months ago, Windows 10 had a patch that made my thumb buttons no longer work based on what my Steelseries WoWMouse app had programmed. I contacted Steelseries to fix it, and they said that this App does not support Windows 10, and... too bad. Buy a new mouse. So I finally got around to finding a fix.

I downloaded a free progam called AutoHotKey. It allows you to program any key on keyboard or mouse to be whatever you want it to be. Like, if I want every time I press Ctrl + 1 to do Ctrl + Alt + Del, then I would make a script that says ^1::^*Del and suddenly it would work. So now I have successfully mapped my thumb buttons and life is good once more and I don't have to spend money on a new mouse.

Code:
XButton1::PgDn
XButton2::PgUp

Put that in a .txt file, and change the file extension from .txt to .ahk
Then set that .ahk file to launch with computer startup and... Victory! I'm pretty stoked about this.

So the Roccat Tyon came in thursday and i've been using it exclusively since. I like it. I like it alot.

I can see having huge hands would be a problem because there are buttons everywhere, but physically it's the same length, maybe slightly taller and wider than my old Logitech M500. The thumb buttons are in a great position and i can hit all of them easily without fat thumbing. The top center fin is a 2 position button (left/right swipe) but nestled as far back as between the webbing of my thumb and the first knuckle is not ideal. Easily ignored however. The RGB lights have a nice color to them and are not too bright at all. It's a nice aesthetic coming from someone who generally hates stuff with lights.

The software...well, it obviously needs work which it's not getting. There are two software version you can get: the Driver and Swarm software. If you are considering this mouse at all STAY AWAY from the Swarm stuff. Don't even download it it's pure hot garbage. The base driver is all you need, and even it can be a little squirrely (more on that later). The configuration screen is well laid out and the button assignments are easily mapped if you don't like the default config (which is actually very decent). The thumb rocker is where you may encounter some trickery with assigning a single keystroke since it's an analog stick in truth that works on either an x or y axis as you assign it. It will take assigned macros however, and the macro editor has a ton of presets for older games. The ability to make new keypress macros works well.

From a hardware standpoint the mouse works a little differently than most mice and i believe it's due to the presence of the analog thumb button. And this is where the squirreliness of the driver comes in. By default Windows saw and installed the mouse instantly with generic drivers and all the default presets worked due to the presence of firmware on the mouse. When you make changes in the roccat driver and apply/okay it updates the firmware on the mouse. And....well it takes more than 10 seconds. Which sucks when you're testing things out. There are lots of reports of it locking up the application when attempting to do this. I personally haven't had an issue yet but then i've been patient to let it do it's thing before clicking anything else.

Would buy again.

Shame that the analog is only single axis. I'd love for a mouse that had a full-fledged analog stick (controller-like) on it.

How's the scroll wheel on it?

Great. The wheel edge is rubberized (about the only piece on here that is) with wide depressions. It's a good grip that doesn't stick. The steps feel like the M500 and in the driver software you can adjust the lines per step too. The wheel doesn't have an option to freespool.

Along with setting up any of the buttons to adjust DPI (at your own resolution specfications and number of steps) you can do the same for scroll lines. Maybe more, but that's one i remember seeing.
